To be fair, in the current age, it is possible for queer ships to become canon, which means that it is a real possibility. That means that corps can dangle over that possibility over queer people's heads.

I try to be cautious whenever the narrative of "this insane fandom is claiming that they got QUEERBAITED! they're just upset their ship didn't become canon!" is pushed. It typically results from misogyny ("hysterical women (and people of marginalized genders)") and attempts to hide the wrongdoing of the media company. Lest we forget, Destiel fans were mocked (including by the creators of the show!) for YEARS before Supernatural's finale aired, where... well, I'm sure you don't need reminding.

I mean, I'm more bothered by people using "it's totally canon" as shipwars! I used to think it's was dumb when only the het shippers did it, and my opinion hasn't changed now that everyone is doing it.

When I was a wee shipper I used to care about my ships going canon more, but as I got older I got far more chill with it. Like I still enjoy my ships that get to be canon, but I'm not shipping a pair of friends and expecting it to happen because that honestly just kind of ruins the fun of shipping them in the first place. Setting expectations onto something is one of the best ways to end up very disappointed and I've learned to be far more chill with that shit over the years.

It's fiction, it's not meant to be stressful.

I've been slash shipping since the 90s, I never expected any of my ships to become canon. I'm in the before-unthinkable position of having my three main slash ships being canon at the same time. It's amazing.

The queerbaiting debate is interesting to me.

For "Sherlock", I assumed all the bits about queerness/gay were simply gay jokes by cishets who supposed gay jokes would delight the fans, they never assumed fans would take it seriously.
And so when fans began asking if Sherlock and John being a couple (or Sherlock and Moriarty) the writers found it delusional ("don't you get that they're just gay jokes!").

I feel like the queerbaiting was supposed to be an easy "have your cake and eat it too" from the creators of media. Acknowledge the gay tension or how seemingly gay a certain pair of characters can be perceived, but have some LOLs that it's just fan service/a wink that they don't hate the gays and corporate/advertisers won't have to worry about "creating controversy" by canonizing queerness.

But fans are like, "Well, you say being gay isn't wrong or bad so when will you canonize this coupling we actively want?"

And like...IDK
This topic definitely needs to keep being discussed and pointed out.

This might have been true 5 years ago, but it is increasingly becoming not true. I'm not quite sure how true the "hurt your bottom line" part is at the moment because most of the platforms doing canon gay relationships in TV/film are online ones (Prime and Netflix), and it is unclear to me what their bottom line even is (it's very complicated to calculate profit with platforms that are both a content hoster and a content producer, and also how one individual show/movie affects that bottom line). But they do continue to pump out shows and films with canon gay relationships, and these have been some of their most successful/most watched programs, so at least in terms of traditional notions of profit, it is very unlikely these shows are hurting their bottom line.

And like, it's true that most normies are not as "yay gay relationships!" as fandom is; fandom forms an extreme point on that scale. But even normies like to see gay relationships in fiction -- you only need to look at things like the sweeps week kiss in order to see that there is actual appetite here from just typical TV-watchers. Companies have just traditionally had to balance the interest that many segments of the population have had in gay relationships depicted on-screen with the conservative Christian backlash you'll face when you confirm characters as gay, which is why you got queerbaiting and sweeps week kisses and so on. But more and more, people can just have actual gay characters on screen and there isn't a massive backlash. That might reverse in the future but so far the trend has been towards confirming characters as gay rather than the opposite.

I like historical fiction myself, but... yeah, sometimes it can be a bit disappointing. I have a challenging time finding fiction that falls in that sweet spot of not being too dry, and being trashy soap opera/romance novels with very little history in them.

Rosemary Sutcliff spoiled me for historical fiction in general. I still imagine the fall of Roman Britain in her terms; and also the defence of Lakeland against the Normans.
