True! While we inside it tend to get a very half-assed second language education, if any. But that's why I said anon could learn some Chinese: I learned a ton of Japanese to read both original and fanworks because that's where the action was at for a bunch of my fandoms. And when you can cross the language barrier you can make more friends!

Besides which, OP: Chinese could be a very marketable skill, too.

Yeah, learning languages is fun, I agree. And fandom makes it more engaging.
(I really dislike Mandarin though)
