This one feels entitled asf to me, idk. "I'd read more if authors met me halfway and started writing shit I wanted to read again," as if all authors know you personally, and are purposefully DEPRIVING you of your god-given right to read books with YOUR favorite narration style. Never mind it is THEM putting in their blood, sweat and tears into this project.

Idk, you could easily say "I wish I could find more books that are third person, past tense, omniscient". But instead you say it like you think authors are all idiots ("it's not that hard") who (customer service nightmare voice) are losing a VERY VALUABLE CUSTOMER!

If OP said that though, the fault might potentially lie with them not looking hard enough to find the massive swaths of exactly that that already exists, or being pickier than they want to sound and not liking the ones that do exist.

No, it must be the authors who are wrong.

Take it down a couple of notches, you are trying too hard. 4/10 trolling.

I don't think that is what OP is saying. The word choice maybe comes off that way. But it seems like what OP is saying is that they aren't going to read things they don't want. They have clear preferences, and they aren't going to read stuff that doesn't fall into that.

+1

No offense, I think you're being nitpicky of the wording. The gist of the secret is they won't read things that aren't interesting to them. The wording is a bit self-centered but this is so over the top.

I read it that way too, in a very snotty voice, with a sniff at the end.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-08 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yup, the same.
Wording of this secret is so entitled

all you have to do is confine your book search to fantasy published between 1970 and 1990. Every fantasy book was a Tolkien ripoff and no one wrote in anything besides third person omniscient in those days.

Right? Like, what OP is asking for is something that exists in droves already. There's no shortage of it. If anything, I'd say there's TOO MUCH of it and this is coming from someone who does in fact like fantasy.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-08 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Exactly! I have to specify that I don't want castles, swords, and chosen orphans when I ask for recs.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-08 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
What if they are somebody who wants all that without all the casual misogyny and racism?

(Anonymous) 2024-12-08 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
they'd probably mention it

I feel you, OP. That's a lot of old-school fantasy elements right there, and I grew up reading some of that stuff and have a lot of nostalgia for it. Unfortunately, they haven't all aged well, and that sort of fantasy isn't really trendy right now. People want to subvert familiar tropes, etc. etc. Which is great! But I'd also like to see some classic high fantasy that isn't 25+ years old and minus the troublesome stuff that didn't age well.
