Things that irrationally annoy you

(Anonymous) 2024-12-08 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate when people post requests and end it with "And go!"

Example: "Hi! I am looking for suggestions for a good squid recipe. And go!"

I don't know why it bugs me so much, but there it is.

Recipes that assume everyone owns a microwave.

I hate recipes that say they are super simple and then assume you own any and all kitchen gadgets - microwaves, food processors, blenders, etc.

it's the ones who expect you to have a stand mixer with X attachments and a food processor that get me. I just want to know if I CAN still make this if I'm hand-mixing with a spatula. Yes? No? Is there an air-incorporating thing with the mixer or is it just a speed of prep thing? TELL ME what the downside is if I use hand tools versus an appliance!

That would annoy me! Have you seen the piece of those mixers lately? They’re $500! I guess they’re easy to afford if you’re a wealthy SAHM who also nets a few thousand every month with intrusive ads on your recipe blog.

I cook out of cookbooks so don’t really run into that. The front always has a guide to workarounds for any small appliances used in the recipes.

Most of the time, mixing with a spatula or a whisk is fine! It's just more tedious.

An electric hand mixer can be very affordable and small, though. The times it's best to have that are for making whipped creams and meringues. But most other things don't need that.

The other item that I find incredibly useful is an immersion stick blender, for blending soups right in the pot. I make a lot of soups like butternut squash and tomato, and it's great for that if you don't like chunks.

I do have a stand mixer and a blender and hardly ever need or use them for anything. They're mostly unnecessary unless you have a ton of space.

Genuine question: there are people who DON'T own microwaves? Because every apartment I've ever rented has had one built-in and I've never seen an apartment that didn't come with one. I've heard of places that don't have stoves or ovens, but not microwaves.

ayrt - yeah, never had a microwave in any of the 4 houses I lived in growing up, or in the 3 apartments I've lived in as an adult. I'm in the U.S.

DA - no place I have ever rented has had a microwave. I've always just bought my own or gone without. But I've never rented from a newer apartment building or something, always older places or houses from private landlords. Stove/oven and refrigerator have been standard, but not microwave.

I've never rented a place that came with a microwave but I've always had one because to me they're a necessity lol. But yeah, it's mine, it travels with me.

I guess I’m the odd one out because I’ve never seen a place that didn’t have one. My shitty basement studio that I paid $360 a month for 30 years ago had one and every place after that.

I wonder if it is regional or just luck of the draw.

Yeah, around here they're just considered an expected part of an apartment. My first apartment was in a 50+ year old building and even that had one.

Recipes that ask you to add a pinch of this and a dab of that and it's always something that most people don't keep on hand, so you'd have to go out and buy some random item (capers, bay leaves, whatever) just to use a tiny bit in a recipe you might not even LIKE....

I have grown to loathe the laughing/crying emoji. This one specifically -> 😂

I mean, it's fine in moderation. But I see it everywhere by certain types we might describe as "sore winners," anywhere there's a public comment section. They emphasize their comments by posting these emojis no fewer than a dozen times in a row, sometimes more, as though not doing so would somehow take away from the validity of their words (hint: it doesn't. Their own stupidity does that regardless of how many emojis are entered). It's a strange compulsion on their part.

If there's a visual equivalent of misophonia, then I have acquired it in this area.

Ugh, yes. I've hated that use of the emoji for what feels like a few years by now, and I JUDGE the people doing that, hard.

Ugh yes, the I Just Owned the Libs emoji.

Same thing when they ask a question and go "I'll start!" and then write five paragraphs.

"What problematic ship is your favorite? I'll start! So I was reading Cardcaptor Sakura...... *ten hours later*... and that's why I think people are really sleeping on these issues.

So what's yours?"

Oooh, me too. It's so bossy!

"Do my work for me and cater to my question. Now!" Barf.

The phrase "food for thought" probably because I only seem to hear it used regarding something that has been already been thought about more than plenty. It goes right along with "examine your preferences."
