honestly same. the only thing I heard way back in the before times about the plot is that it's a subversion of Wizard of Oz. Ok, that's cool, can you explain more about the nature of the subversion? No? ok well then.

Baum's books are open for subversion but not in the way most people think. Like, 90% of what people expect out of Oz canon comes from the Judy Garland movie, not the books, and that's why things just don't make any fucking sense; that is, you can subvert things from the book canon but not the movie canon. At that point, wizards/witches who have past history can work as an original goddamn story, NOT as a subversion of Oz canon.

OP

I am not American so the whole thing is a bit twisted for me. I read the first few books but I've never seen '39 movie. But I am absolutely aware of it because pop culture is like that. I don't need movie's subversion because it's not my beloved childhood movie and the story seems pretty straightforward. And I don't need books' subversion because I don't think I care for them enough. Though there is a whole playground for it in the books.
So I would really prefer just wizards and witches story.

Plus I have weird relationships with musicals (I love musicals but I hate a lot of tropes they have, so sometimes I loath musicals. It's a whole mess)

I agree that it could and maybe should be its own thing instead of Wizard of Oz fanfic, but I still think it's a good story. I don't care about whether and how well it "subverts" anything or not.
