Re: Do you like sci-fi/fantasy?

There are some things that really do fit in both, though. Star Wars is set in space but full of magic. Comics and superhero movies fit in both, though they do have some parts that fit more into one or the other. Doctor Who can lean more into fantasy at different points.

Star Wars is sci-fi that has fantasy elements. Same with Doctor Who. Comics and superheroes are their own categories. Any decent library or bookstore of the 20th century had them separated and still do. But the digital search didn’t separate them.

If you’re a reader, it absolutely sucks browsing for fantasy and having the first twenty pages of results be sci-fi and superheroes. If you want to read sci-fi, it sucks having a ton of fantasy smooshed into the results. And for many years, that was the norm.

Thankfully, most library catalogs have filtering these days and so does Audible and the Kindle store. Sci-fi and fantasy might be the main banner but once you click it, you can weed out what you don’t want and find the stuff you do.
