So there's 'A Christmas Carol,' right? And what really drives the lesson home for our boy Ebenezer is when the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come shows him how he dies, or specifically, how the rest of his world responds to his death.

Everyone remembers his fellow businessmen debating whether a free lunch is worth inconveniencing themselves to go to his funeral and the part where his servants and the undertaker pawn stuff they stole from his deathbed. Fewer people remember that when Scrooge asked to see someone who actually felt something about his death, the Future showed him the joy of a young couple who would not be turned out onto the street on Christmas now that he was dead.

What you're seeing now is the Christmas Carol AU where TPTB turn down Jacob Marley's request to save his stupid friend from his own wickedness. The story didn't confuse the masses back then, and I have faith that you're at least as smart as the popular fiction-reading public of 1840s London.
