I don't go to cons, and in the fandoms I was in online in the past, several BNFs saw their influence disappear in the wake of their trying to use it against people unfairly.

I have a lot of appreciation for the way fandom has successfully resisted many attempts to take fanfiction away from the women making it, and turn the gift economy into a cash cow for ambitious dudebros who think everything on the internet that doesn't have a copyright-holder is their ticket to riches.

Yeah, we could do with less half-baked ideas and assumptions around here, but I get tired of claims that it's "always" been equally bad and that if you think anything ever changes, that's just some weird perceptual distortion, because nothing in fandom can possibly go up or down or exhibit variation.
