I mean, you're not wrong, since most people who enjoy anthro characters in media back way the fuck off when they see the cartoon-eyed mascot costume in person.

otoh there are a few properties where the demihuman characters are designed well and look very realistic, like the kobold-dogs in early Suikoden. There's no cartoonishness involved, you can see how they would be very real and interesting to talk to as beings. Maybe fuckable, maybe not, but at least there's a few media properties actually trying. See also: the live action One Piece, while dropping so many balls, actually managed to make realistic-looking fishmen who were also accurate to Oda's drawings. It's not impossible, but it is rare.
