Music subgenres

What are your favorite music subgenres (I mean, smaller genres like electric pop or power metal rather than the larger ones like pop or metal)?

Outrun/synthwave, New Wave, electro swing, antique music box renditions of classical music pieces, pop music parodies, and experimental music in general.

+1 for synthwave, I love finding a playlist of that on youtube and sticking it on while I cook/clean.

I find so many New Wave afficionados are also into synthwave, naturally. Synthwave is what you get when a New Wave songwriter dabbles in techno and then returns to their roots.

Prog metal! Lateralus by TOOL is one of my favorite albums of all time. I also love King Crimson's THRAK.

OMG my personal hell would be having to listen to nothing but prog rock. I do like Rush's Moving Pictures, though.

Damn lol! I'm just the opposite, if I could listen to only one genre I'd go with prog, there is such variety within the genre anyway that I don't think I'd get bored personally. I love prog and math rock, I have done a lot of jobs with repetitive physical labor requiring intense focus and really like listening to long, sonically layered tracks at work. I like eurobeat and trance for the same purposes. I don't really hate any genre.

I loooove Rush, they're one of my favorite bands.

Synthwave and synthwave-metal, which is industrial-adjacent but in wholly different chord progression styles; 00's era trance, 90s 3rd wave ska-punk, Celtic punk, Norwegion death metal (just watch out for Nazis), Japanese shamisen speed metal, post-new wave goth synthpop, and the occasional whatever the fuck Lindsey Sterling is classified as. I like a lot of straight up alternative but at the same time, my playlists are based on Two Steps from Hell, Celldweller, and various 80s movie soundtracks, so subgenres are wonderful.

Synthwave metal recs? More industrial-leaning than not would be great but I'm curious about the genre in general.

Re: Music subgenres

More industrial would be Carpenter Brut, Perturbator, Celldweller, and a little bit Blue Stahli (more moody than metal), though my top rec is Dance With the Dead. Also love Fury Weekend and Gunship even though they're less metal, both can have darker, gothier sounds compared to straight-up soft 80s synthwave like FM-84 or PYLOT.

Most of these artists do a lot of cross-collabs and remixes of each other so if you search one, you'll be connected to all the others quickly.

Oh I've heard a bit of Perturbator and Carpenter Brut before and really liked them. Idk any of these other artists, I'll check them out! Thanks.

Perfect, if you liked those two you'll LOVE Dance With the Dead. I've seen them live twice, they're incredible. DWtD is closer to Carpenter Brut than, say, Fury Weekend, I find them to be an ideal balance of hair metal licks and industrial synth.

I personally do also like the synth side of synthwave so I'm super into Fury Weekend, FM-84, Sunset Neon, and Scandroid, but I cut my teeth in the 90s on industrial from NIN to Argyle Park, so the edge is also in my wheelhouse and on my playlist.

I've been getting into electroswing a bit recently.

Can you give me some recs? A friend of mine is pretty sure I will like the genre but all of her music is on Youtube and I can only deal with Spotify on my phone, rip.

I'm in a similar situation to your friend, I use amazon music so I just say "Alexa play some electro swing" and there it is. I picked up a couple of names, tho. Swing rowers, Caravan Palace, Caro Emerald, and The Chalkeaters if you like a bit more nerdy / comedy type songs. The Electro Swing Orchestra as well, but they could be a bit more Hit and Miss.

I think the first example I ever heard of the genre was a song by Basement Jaxx from EONS ago called "Do your thing". If you're old enough to remember that from, like early 2000's (or from SSX), you'll probably have an idea of the genre.

Thank you! Caravan Palace and Caro Emerald were two of the bands I've tried and I loved them!
