What are your favorite music covers? Are there any you actually prefer to the original?

Ciara's 'Paint it Black' is a wonderful, more moodily villainous version of the song and I love it.

Disturbed's version of 'Sound of Silence' is absolutely marvellous and I adore it.

The obvious one is Johnny Cash's Hurt. Some lesser known ones I love (I have a whole playlist of covers) are Billie Jean by The Civil Wars, Eleanor Rigby by Cody Fry, Feeling Good by Lauryn Hill, In the Air Tonight by the Protomen, Mr. Roboto by The Protomen.

There are also some artists I like like Kendra Morris, Hayseed Dixie, and Scala & Kolacny Brothers.

any cover by Johnny Cash, David Bowie or the Ramones

Whitney sang I Will Always Love You best.

And every Bob Dylan song is a billion times better when anyone but Bob Dylan performs it.

I love Nirvana's cover of In the Pines and The Man Who Sold the World.

I like Tegan and Sara's version of Rebel Rebel better than the original, which is blasphemy to many Bowie fans.

There are a couple of Bo Burnham covers from Inside that I like better or equal to the originals.

And of course Johnny Cash's version of Hurt is top tier.

I like Rebel Rebel!
And I actively dislike Nirvana's TMWSTW cover.
I am being a bad Bowie fan

I never listen to the original Dance Me to the End of Love, the only version I acknowledge is the one by The Civil Wars. Their I Want You Back is also superb.

Most of his stuff is great.

I actually rather enjoy Uncle Kracker's version of "Drift Away".

Oh yes! Prefer it to the original.

Chase Holfelder's cover of Animal. His music fits the lyrics so much better than the original.

Hmmm respectfully disagree here, it loses the frenetic energy and chaotic passion of the original. It kinda goes from Disaster Gays to standard Bad Romance.

I guess it wasn't open at the time that the original singer was a closeted (now ex-)Mormon but pretty much everyone could tell

"Wild Night" by John Mellencamp and Me'shell Ndegeocello. It's just damn good. (The original's good too, but I prefer this one.)

Ooooh good one! I love both pretty equally. Van Morrison’s has a frenetic energy the cover just doesn’t capture but the cover sounds and feels so good. That bass line reaches into the soul and makes me feel all the feels!

Of all the many, many covers of "Cry Little Sister" I like the Anix the most. A lot of synthwave covers of new wave hits (Shout, Blue Monday, Send Me an Angel) are pretty good. Favorite that I prefer to the original is the Echoing Green's remake of New Order's "New Gold Dream." The original is slow and plodding, the remake is solid dance with heavy guitar riffs.

Oh also throwing an ancient shoutout to Audio Adrenaline's cover of the Hairbrush Song.

Anya's done a bunch of great covers actually, this one will always be my favourite though.

Jennifer Saunders (the Fairy Godmother in Shrek 2) has the superior rendition of Holding Out for a Hero.

I had no idea she was in Shrek 2 and that she covered this, off to Youtube!

As much as I like Stevie Wonder, I actually prefer the Red Hot Chili Peppers' version of "Higher Ground" because it has so much *energy*.

I prefer Rascal Flatts’ version of Life is a Highway to Tom Cochrane’s version.

Pentatonix's version of 'Jolene', though it's not a true cover since Dolly Parton sings with them, I really like the different arrangement.

Charlotte Awbery's version of 'Shallow' - I generally like Lady Gaga, but this just sounds better to me

Drew Love's version of 'Karma Chameleon' - I thought I really disliked this song until I heard this version, then I realized what I really disliked was the way Culture Club performs it (I find the way Boy George sings really grating)
