I get this about a lot of kids shows I used to love. There just came a point where I was like "where are all the adults?" and realizing these kids were obnoxious. But I think that's why a lot of kids media is for kids. Like my nephews love some really obnoxious shows, but I figure they're just seeing it through the kids lens and for the intended audience.

"But I think that's why a lot of kids media is for kids"
surely all kids media is for kids? It's great if you also find meaning in it as an adult, but you're the +1 in this situation

Yeah, that happens. There are definitely things I found less obnoxious about kid protagonists when I was a kid, because it's about wish fulfillment for the target demographic.

It's always interesting to realize when something doesn't work for you anymore.

And it is harder to tolerate obnoxious kids in media the older I get XD
I was once that child, but also have dealt with children like that and it ain't as cool or cute as I used to think.

As a rule, I've found that kid characters in fanfiction are often much more readable for me than the ones paid authors make. It's like ... there's a particular (easily discouraged, emotionally incompetent, logic-challenged) stereotype of what makes a personality "a child" in a lot of published writing, and I loathed it and didn't identify, even when I was a kid and a teen, myself.

Orson Scott Card wrote about how he intentionally didn’t make the Ender’s Game kids this. Then if you read some of his later stuff, the kids are this anyway. It’s infuriating.

And? Orson Scott Card is a very vocal homophobe. Why are you reading his works?

Because I didn’t know that then.

AYRT

I found this interesting, and I'm sorry another anon jumped on you for mentioning it.

I'm trying to remember if this has ever happened to me, but I can only remember a couple of cases where I ended up liking a character I'd thought was annoying and hated when I was a kid. When I was a kid I thought "I know this character has a reason for being the way they are, but I don't care, they still don't have to be so annoying about it, ugh." As an adult I just see a kid coping and feel sympathy. As for which characters I'm talking about, one is too obscure to mention without outing myself, but the other is Marco from Animorphs.

I remember rewatching Labyrinth when I was about 18 - the first time since I was a kid. "Oh wow, Jennifer Connelly is really annoying, she's being a real brat to her dad, she's so dramatic, ugh"
Now, aged 40: "God, everything is just so much when you're 16. She's a dramatic brat - just like I was, just like every teen should get to be"

I mean, it depends on the actual show you were watching, but of course you're going to react differently when the protagonists are your age vs when you've aged past them.
