As a rule, I've found that kid characters in fanfiction are often much more readable for me than the ones paid authors make. It's like ... there's a particular (easily discouraged, emotionally incompetent, logic-challenged) stereotype of what makes a personality "a child" in a lot of published writing, and I loathed it and didn't identify, even when I was a kid and a teen, myself.

Orson Scott Card wrote about how he intentionally didn’t make the Ender’s Game kids this. Then if you read some of his later stuff, the kids are this anyway. It’s infuriating.
