I hate it when people do this. If you can't make it after all, it's not that hard to text back, apologize and say you're swamped and maybe after new year's. It takes a few seconds, and it's the polite thing to do. People come up with all sorts of lame excuses about they couldn't possibly pick up a phone and write a single sentence and unless you're in the midst of an emergency, none of the excuses sound reasonable.
