Re: Do you like your job?

Yeah, I work for a municipal government, so I belong to a union and have good health insurance and have been with them 20 years so I earn a lot of paid time off, but I may never be able to retire because I was hourly and half time for most of those years so I'm still not vested; we don't pay into social security so I could quit tomorrow after 20 years and have no retirement money.

I actually like helping the public with their requests and book and media hunts, even though I'm not good at people generally. I will say I love to read and so do a lot of my coworkers, but it's pretty rare to be able to read on the job, so patrons who say "I'd love to just read all day" get on my nerves like nope, have fun plunging toilets, breaking up fights, administering narcan, calling 911 knowing the cops may not show at all/until after shit has hit the fan and been sprayed everywhere, and helping scared desperate people navigate the threadbare social safety net while they call you a parasite on the public purse and a child groomer because you won't stop third graders from reading Captain Underpants.

Our funding is a constant struggle since our (library) department (and Park and Rec's as well) budget is basically the change we dig out of police station couch cushions, and we're in for massive scary cuts this year and probably for the next few years, even if (belongs in Politics thread) stuff doesn't kick us when we're down.

Idk, I whine but I can't imagine doing any other job. Still dunno whether it's worth it to go for my MLIS though; I love school but it doesn't love me.
