Just in terms of falling-hopelessly-in-love-with-book, The Scar might be my favourite thing ever ;_; I can't tell you how many times it whomped me over the head with amazingness. I love Iron Council and I think it's incredibly powerful and intellectually satisfying, but fuck if The Scar wasn't a better read for me.

(Helped that I didn't have to deal with an entire book-within-a-book where all the female characters were sex workers, I bet. And I adore Anamnesis ~ The Perpetual Train, but, yeah.)

You mean the novel-length flashback about Judah's past? I loved that. Hell, I love Judah. In all the thousands of books, shows, and movies I've read/seen in my life, I've found 3 characters who are ME in a flawless and essential way -- he is one.

And the whores thing? Well, TECHNICALLY, not all the female characters were whores -- some were Remade. But being a whore isn't something that is derogatory here, in this context. It's also, as I understand it, a relatively accurate portrayal of US Western expansion -- many, if not MOST of the women present in the West while the rails were being built were involved in the sex trade. I started shipping them pretty much the first time they looked at each other and then I swear to god the shipteasing escalated every single time they were in the same scene, then I started swearing Mieville was doing it on purpose, and then we get that bit at the end that says Uther was visiting The Brucolac at night and OH GOD IT'S SO ALMOST_CANON I CAN'T BEAR IT.

I don't even now who you're talking about, but knowing Mieville's writing from Iron Council, I would be surprised if he WASN'T. I don't usually tend to like reading too much into canon for slashy reasons, but with Mieville, based on my reading of him, I assume arguments could be made and I get the impression the author himself would not overly object to such an interpretation...

Finding out what happened with him was one of my favourite parts of Iron Council (well, finding out from a different perspective than Looking for Jake gave). It's a little embarrassing how long it took me to realise the play on words in his name, though.
