I do see it misapplied -- having rape fantasies does not make you a bad feminist -- but I only really see the word "feminist" in a secret as being attention-seeking when it's baiting us: "Secret because omg the feminists would lynch me" is pretty much guaranteed to start some wank. Much like this secret, actually :B

THAT SAID the man-hating, homemaker-hating, be-the-one-type-of-woman-I-define sort of feminist is a straw man. I'm sure there are people out there with that view, because there are crazies in every group, but suggesting they are the majority of the feminist movement is just wrong, and it ends up being an attempt to discredit the movement as a whole, which continues to strive for worthy causes -- shelters and help for battered women, increasing awareness about rape, fighting against sexism in the workplace and the glass ceiling, even down to (since this is FANDOM secrets) encouraging more fully realized female characters in fiction. It's the "feminist" movement because it's about bringing women up to a level of power that men have always enjoyed, and the struggle is far from over.

I see more definition!fail about feminism from people who DON'T consider themselves feminists than from people who do.

I'd like to believe it's not the majority, simply because there are countless organizations who do great things, just as you mentioned. However, like most things, it only takes a few to really soil the movement. And often, everyone else gets looped in with the feminazis.

But it sure does seem like people go out of their way to mention the crazies whenever a discussion involving feminism comes up, even if none of the actual discussion participants are putting forth any of those arguments.
