Dear Anon,
Let's make out. (Although I'm not an RPS person and in fact find RPS really squicky, but whatever, it's your thing and you're not making me read it, etc etc.) I've been saying similar things in the Watchmen fandom for a while.
Sincerely,
Eugene

Dear Various Respondents To This Secret,
Guys, chill! He's not saying that a sexual identity crisis isn't a big deal. He's saying he wishes that there were more fic that didn't focus on it, and by extension, focus on how OMG WEIRD being gay is. Especially considering it's J2 -- two relatively liberal guys in 2009 are pretty unlikely to have freakouts over it. They're actors. You can pretty much guarantee they have gay friends. All actors do; Hollywood's a very queer place.

If you guys think that stereotyping gay people or accentuating their "otherness" isn't homophobic, I think it's time to read some queer theory and soulsearch a little.
Sincerely,
Eugene

o hai there

Good to see someone being reasonable! I get kind of annoyed at the defensiveness people have for slash stereotypes. Some of the comments here are O_o

[identity profile] sophiamoon.livejournal.com 2009-09-20 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you. :-)

OP here.

Thank you for being the voice of reason; I was pretty taken aback that the other commentators seem to think that the slash tropes I mention in the secret aren't homophobic.

Though I do see that some have a point that coming out is problematic in most societies even today and just because I didn't have 'gay panic' doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Then again, I was 11 when I knew I liked boys, so it was absolutely normal for me.

When we make out, do you want it to be anonymous or do you want a name to scream?

[identity profile] zanzou-chan.livejournal.com 2009-09-20 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it really matters if the people in question are liberal/have lots of gay friends/whatever. Discovering that you aren't something you thought you were is going to be a big deal, no matter your background.

[identity profile] eugenetapdance.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, for some people. For others, no.

If you really think that realizing you're gay is always a seriously distressing experience, regardless of your background or personality, I don't think you understand gay people very well.

[identity profile] zanzou-chan.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I'm thinking more along the lines of "I thought I was straight for years and lived as such-- but no. Gay. Totally gay." That's going to cause some sort of shock/experience/something. And since these are, for all intents and purposes, straights men, I honestly can't imagine any other response.

Knowing you're gay from a young age is totally different, of course, as would be discovering you're bisexual with some person when you're older, but full on being so in-denial (not even closetted) and then discovering you'd been living a lie for the last decades of your life? Yeah. That would be a big deal.

[identity profile] eugenetapdance.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, definitely.

However, fic often presents the realization that one is gay as a huge cataclysm that is going to be necessarily negative emotionally. I have difficulty understanding that as anything other than homophobic.

The key is variety, variety, variety.

Tony Stark, for example, who I'm guessing from your icon is someone you're a fan of. My guess is that if Tony suddenly realized he were gay or bi, his reaction would be surprise and then going out and being a total ho in the way we love so much.

Steve, on the other hand, because of growing up in the past, would have a really distressing experience with realizing he was gay or bi.

See what I mean? Different people react differently. What I think the OP and I are objecting to is a kind of monolithic view of the reaction to realization of one's sexuality.

[identity profile] zanzou-chan.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, see, I could agree with that.

FYI both of them could potentially have a wiiiide range of reactions, and I'm rather fond of the Tony-was-bi-from-a-young-age, Steve-is-too-chill-to-be-bothered-and-also-was-in-the-army-but-you-just-don't-talk-about-those-things varieties.

I sort of agree. While I hate the stereotyping in fanfic, as long as the people writing it realize that not all gay people act like that and that what they are writing is mostly fantasy, it's cool. I have issues with the straight girls who think they understand gay men because they write slash/yaoi- a lot of those people also happen to write a lot of the most cliché, stereotyped fic.

And I'm going to second [livejournal.com profile] zanzou_chan's comments above. I have a straight female friend who got confused on her sexuality and freaked out, but she also supports gay rights and knows that fic=/=reality and all that. Some people are just freaked out by realizing that they have been living a lie their entire life.

(Anonymous) 2009-09-21 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
I'm honestly having trouble understanding what you mean--I think stereotypes are stupid too, I do! But it feels strange to read a fic where a person realizes they're not straight and doesn't have at least some internal reaction to it. Especially in Watchmen, sorry. :\ Maybe I don't get it because I'm a woman? Or maybe I only half get it because I'm bisexual (har har)?

[identity profile] eugenetapdance.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
Well, a reaction is one thing. It's just that it doesn't always have to be OMG I'M GAY WTF LAKDFJLKAJ ANGST, and it feels that way a lot in fic. All I'm saying is that variety is the spice of life.

For example, I've seen Adrian written freaking out about being gay or just being totally chilled out about it -- both seemed realistic, though admittedly the first one is harder to do well, seeing as Adrian doesn't seem like he'd freak out about his sexuality. (Ahahaha, I love that the Watchmen fandom never questions Adrian being gay.)

By the way, I hope nothing I've said has sounded like I'm marginalizing bi people. Bi people are amazing, and I hate when the queer community acts like bi people are somehow not "really" queer. There's a B in LGBTI for a reason.

(Anonymous) 2009-09-21 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
All right, that I can agree with. :) Different people should have different reactions according to who/where/when the person is. My own reaction was extremely bad and seeing that reflected in fics, along with seeing the character move past it makes me feel better oddly enough. So I was probably feeling a little defensive about this topic!

[identity profile] eugenetapdance.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
Incidentally, my reaction was pretty bad too, and I've written a lot of fic about the realization of one's sexuality being a traumatic experience -- it makes me feel better too. (Please see character in my icon, ahahaha.) I just think we should have variety. So basically, we're in total agreement here, and I feel like there should be high fiving.

[identity profile] daylilymoon.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
No point in anoning anymore :) Thanks for the discussion. Yay for variety and agreement! *high fives*

(Anonymous) 2009-09-21 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
Oh and I didn't think you were trying to marginalize bi people at all. I was just inserting a lame joke. :)

(Anonymous) 2009-09-21 11:54 am (UTC)(link)
(Ahahaha, I love that the Watchmen fandom never questions Adrian being gay.)

Rorschach makes mention he suspects Adrian is gay and that he needs to look into it further. At work and I can't look up exact wording.

So, no, noone freaks about it but it does get mention that he's a homosexual and by a character that has issues.

[identity profile] eugenetapdance.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 12:00 pm (UTC)(link)
In the movie, there's a folder on his computer that says "BOYS." So yeah, in the film version he's more or less canon gay.

Also, never underestimate the crazy that is Alan Moore -- Adrian is probably named after Conrad Veidt, a gay German actor, and his obsession with Greece and the very homosexual Alexander the Great also dovetails with a gay interpretation. It's possible that Moore has Rorschach mention Adrian's possible homosexuality in order to make the reader consider the possibility.
