Lmfao, I'm sorry, they aren't writing about gay men. They're writing about real people, neither of whom are known to be gay at all.

Bitch/complain about top/bottom roles all you want, but some people like them (myself included), and they happen in real life. Since this is basically fetishfiction, let people have their fetishes.

MTE. My kink is okay, your kink is okay, etc. If anon does not like what is out there, anon should stfu and write his/her own.

(Anonymous) 2009-09-20 08:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow. You know, I can say from experience, realizing your sexuality isn't quite what you thought it was CAN be a very big deal for some people. I don't know why it somehow offends you that fics deal with and mention that, but that's not homophobia, jesus christ. I can see where you're coming from about bottoming and gender roles, but the rest of it? I'm sorry, just no.

[identity profile] elmathelas.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
MTE. I fell in love with my best friend YEARS after we'd met, and while I didn't experience gay panic I did experience gay WTF-ery. After I had calmed down about that I realized that if I were honest with myself I'd have realized that I'd been bi for a long time, and then after that I was able to start a relationship with her. The whole process took months. So sure, I can see where that storyline would be tiresome if it's all you've encountered, but a.) it's far from all I've encountered and b.) it's sometimes fairly true to what real life can be.

And if a fic presents a character perceiving homosexuality as Other, well, to that character it may well be. And to a person who has thought that they were straight all their lives, gay people are the Other. Whether or not you get over that is part of the story.

Incidentally, many fanfiction writers haven't reached the point in their education where they get to deconstruct texts in this manner, so throwing around fairly specialized academic jargon in reference to a popular fanfic pairing is, perhaps, excluding people who haven't yet chewed through the entire Hegelian history of the Other and Simone de Bouvior's development of the concept in particular.

If you're so irritated, I beg you, please do write some of what would please you. It would probably be a joy to a great deal of fanfic readers as well.

I don't even know what fandom this is, but I don't think whatever you just described is homophobia.
Sorry.

(Anonymous) 2009-09-20 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Fangirls aren't writing for you, male anon. They're writing for each other. If you want fic that you, as a man, find realistic, you're just going to have to write it. Don't cry homophobia because women are interested in telling stories you don't want to read.

[identity profile] eugenetapdance.livejournal.com 2009-09-20 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I see where you're coming from -- slash fandom is a great space for women to articulate what turns them on. Such spaces are unfortunately few and far between, because of our society's fucked up attitude towards female sexuality.

The fact remains, though, that gay men are a valuable part of the slash fandom too. (I mean, I hope we are, I'd like to be valuable.) We've been contributing since the very beginning -- I'm thinking of guys like the late Minotaur (http://www.squidge.org/~minotaur/classic/eroc.html) here -- and we like it. We have no desire to go away.

Like it or not, slash fandom is a space for women, men, and everyone in between, and yeah, the men in slash fandom are going to bitch about the stuff we don't like just as much as the women are.

One big happy porny family!

THIS!

(Anonymous) 2009-09-20 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
As someone who just entered a very rocky relationship with her female BFF and previously thought she was straight, I can tell you that the whole sexual-identity crisis thing IS kind of a big deal. I'm still not really sure about it, haha. Hence why it would feature so much in the plot. If people were writing about two guys who were actually gay I doubt it'd be so explored as a ~plot device.

[identity profile] sessile29.livejournal.com 2009-09-20 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Dude, now I understand why people say WRITE IT YOURSELF. You wanna see all that shit, OP? Fucking DO IT YOURSELF. People often write about shit they care about, and if you want some fucking curtain!fic, then you better keep on digging instead of demanding that fic writers bend to your whims. JFC.

I don't even like coming-out stories, but this secret is just fucking ridiculous.

[identity profile] eugenetapdance.livejournal.com 2009-09-20 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Dear Anon,
Let's make out. (Although I'm not an RPS person and in fact find RPS really squicky, but whatever, it's your thing and you're not making me read it, etc etc.) I've been saying similar things in the Watchmen fandom for a while.
Sincerely,
Eugene

Dear Various Respondents To This Secret,
Guys, chill! He's not saying that a sexual identity crisis isn't a big deal. He's saying he wishes that there were more fic that didn't focus on it, and by extension, focus on how OMG WEIRD being gay is. Especially considering it's J2 -- two relatively liberal guys in 2009 are pretty unlikely to have freakouts over it. They're actors. You can pretty much guarantee they have gay friends. All actors do; Hollywood's a very queer place.

If you guys think that stereotyping gay people or accentuating their "otherness" isn't homophobic, I think it's time to read some queer theory and soulsearch a little.
Sincerely,
Eugene

Mmm, I hear you - while getting over internalised homophobia is a real part of the lives of many queers, it's something I feel like I'm done with IRL and I don't want to read about it in fanfic any more, on the whole. I want fandom to be my magical fantasy land where there is nothing odd or difficult about bisexuality, thanks. And reading things that dwell on it too much tends to skeeve me - I guess it's just the places I read, but I encounter that far more in dead tree books than in fandom, fortunately. (Geoff Ryman's Was, for instance - Ryman is gay himself but the fact that that book had way way more about internalised homophobia, AIDS etc than about any remotely fulfilling aspect of queer completely skeeved me.)

I'm not into SPN or RPF so I don't know what specifically you're on about, though. I'd advise you to migrate to a part of fandom that's less into that kind of story, or to do your bit to organise/write some SPN fic that's not about internalised homophobia.

[identity profile] duckgirlie.livejournal.com 2009-09-20 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't read much J2, but (aside from Bottom!Jensen), I've barely seen any of these clichés. I guess I'm only in the good 10%. Check out [livejournal.com profile] chash's stuff. Or most of the stuff on [livejournal.com profile] amplificathon.

Well, possibly they write that because we do live in a homophobic society that threats gay people like shit and coming out isn't all peaches and cream, and because those two actors haven't openly admitted they are gay, so gay fantasies about them should have a reason for this secretiveness if realism is a goal.

But I get that this is your anti-kink, and you'd like more fluffy fantasies where they are openly, happily gay with each other, to hell with real life and tin-hatting explanations for how J2 might actually exist given what's known about their lives. Good luck with your hunt.

I actually think "stereotypical, inaccurate and often extremely homophobic" applies to about 75% of slash fanfic, regardless of fandom.

i have never seen too much of either show, but.

Torchwood has actual, canonically gay (or bi? are they bi? i don't really know) characters. for them to be in a gay relationship is not surprising. because there are gay relationships on the show. that happen on tv. that are assumed to be a part of the story before fanfiction is written. so the fanfiction doesn't have to focus on the relationship the same way. the show has already done it.

conversely, this RPF pairing is a fanfiction pairing, and though you might personally believe they are involved with one another, frankly it's unfair of you to assume anything unless they've come out and said it. if they are gay, why is it your business to out them? if they aren't, then this is purely writer fantasy and as such its level of "realism" is going to go down. since these ARE apparently, publicly straight men, why is it so difficult for you to believe they might be uneasy if they found themselves moving into a relationship with each other? is it realistic of you to assume that every straight person in the world would be perfectly comfortable finding themselves in a homosexual relationship? since these people are writing fics about two previously straight men becoming gay, then why is it surprising that the fanfictions are about... straight men who are finding out that they're gay?

i agree with the gender-roles thing, but that's a whole other issue

in short, write your own fic if you're so unhappy with what's there, that's what fandom is for.

Well, mostly girls write fic for them. Is just s fetish, not real life.

[identity profile] riveryklown.livejournal.com 2009-09-21 07:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know how much you know about them but they are both very... "we watch football and drink beer and are therefore many men of straight persuasion" types. Pink shirts and hugging aside. It doesn't really matter who they actually have sex with, this is the image they are trying to give us. So, it's reasonable to assume that if a guy like that (especially Jensen, with his religious background) suddenly found himself attractive to another guy, he wouldn't just be ok with it. Frankly I'm upset by the fics that gloss over it.

And I really haven't noticed "omg I'm gay" as a theme so much, often people will skip that part completely by just making them bi all along. Maybe I'm reading the wrong stuff :)

(LoL at my icon totally disputing my point :D )
