What part of the Star Wars fandom are you hanging out in, OP. Most of the fandom that I've seen is the opposite, getting offended by even a hint of anything "woke" and hating the new stuff just for existing.

That is just a lie.

No it isn't. Not all the fandom is that way. But a huge portion of it is. And I've not seen any of what the OP is saying anywhere in the fandom.

da

Well, I have. People who promote the idea that the ruling class not liking you is the most defining aspect of what being non-white *is* are ridiculously willing to attack anyone who disagrees. Latin Americans, Middle Easterners, and Asians bear the brunt of this blanket dismissal, because indoctrinated "allies" don't hesitate to claim they're not REALLY non-white. (Never mind that they would be touted as PoC if they kept quiet or were conforming better to white people's stereotypes of how oppressed people act and feel!) But black people are not exempt if they push back, either.

Star Wars fandom on Tumblr was chock-full of this nonsense during the sequel trilogy. I met PoC teenagers who were publicly accused of being racists for writing fanfics that presented PoC characters as struggling realistically with character flaws and plausible vices. (If a fic shows Han Solo hitting the bottle, no one bats an eye, but allegedly Poe Dameron must be written as a credit to his race? When you put their arguments bluntly, they're outrageously offensive.) I could point you to the page of another fan who weathered an organized mobbing for saying that Finn and Rey were rightly treated by the First Order as enemy combatants, because you don't get to keep being classified as an "innocent civilian" after picking up guns and shooting soldiers with them. That person was half-black, herself, but that did not matter. The social justice rhetoric that's wielded like a cudgel in supposedly leftist fandom circles is used against anyone who doesn't pay lip service to it. PoC are treated like a convenient figleaf and shamefully attacked if they won't they play along.

Or they were - I have no reason to believe that's changed, and the OP's post doesn't make me think so, but I left, too.

No claims besides describing someone's personal experience was made. You'd be a terrible lawyer

(Anonymous) 2024-12-26 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
In what way?

(Anonymous) 2024-12-26 12:55 am (UTC)(link)

OP

My corner revolved mostly around 'Rogue One,' and overlapped with the part of fandom that agreed with the essay, "Why The Last Jedi isn't Just Bad: It's Toxic" (if you never came across it, here's an archive link: https://web.archive.org/web/20230328051027/http://scavengersholocron.com:80/category/home/why-the-last-jedi-isnt-just-bad-its-toxic/). The thesis of the essay is stated as follows:

The problem is that while The Last Jedi is being branded as the most feminist Star Wars film to date, its “feminism” seems like a cheap marketing ploy to appeal to a wiser audience and downplays some of the key problems within the film itself: it’s built on a foundation of sexism, misogyny, and racism. In other words, if you’re anything other than a white male, this film isn’t made for you.

I share this quote largely to give you an idea of how different the perspective in this part of fandom is from the slice that you've seen. I've seen what you mention, as well, but those are spaces that I left almost immediately.

Wow. I have personally not seen that. But honestly I avoid the Star Wars fandom these days. It is just so toxic, and I don't want to lose my love. I'm sorry you had to deal with that.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-26 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
Tip of an iceberg, that.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-26 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
I have seen both sides of this in Star Wars fandom, there is a strong social justice fandom and also a strong anti-woke fandom. Just like most big, long-running SF franchises. See also: Star Trek, Doctor Who.

+1000

They're both obnoxious.
