So wait, you just don't ship anything that's "popular?" Like, if you start out being into a pairing, but then lots of other people do as well, do you lose all interest?

reacts badly to oversaturation maybe?

There used to be this argument that whenever a gay male ship got popular, the characters got “possessed” by the same two personalities, regardless of what they were like in canon. Maybe lesbian ships do that too, I dunno.

This is extremely true for femslash ships, with those personalities being "soft" and "softer." Recently there's been a conscious effort to fix this, but it's mostly been talk and memes. You may have heard the pleas for "toxic yuri," but I haven't seen much real toxic yuri yet.

That's definitely been my experience, the few times I ventured into yuri.

A better writer could write a really creepy horror fic from that.

da

If you know of anyone who does, I would so read that.

I've definitely seen that happen in fandoms and it's really disappointing when you're into the ship because you love how the characters are in... you know, the canon itself.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-26 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
Honestly I get it. Fandoms, in my experience, can get really toxic and entitled about popular ships. And then angry when they don't happen in canon as if they were owed. Or angry about how it happens in canon if it isn't exactly how they wanted.

I get it...I can be knocked from 'indifferent' to 'hate with the passion of a thousand suns' if it gets to unavoidable. (Mostly with m/m and m/f, since no f/f pairing that I wasn't shipping myself at least a little has gotten that ubiquitous in any of my fandoms.) I try not to complain about it, blacklist where I can and scroll past where I can't...quietly leaving communities for a time, as a last resort.

Saaaame.
I never get from neutral to shipping when pairing gets popular. I always go from neutral to hate.

OP

(Anonymous) 2024-12-26 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
actually i was never into them as a ship. i just like them as friends. but their ship got popular super quick and suddenly it's impossible to avoid shippy stuff in the tags at all bc there's no consistent tagging. it sucks. this fandom has tied itself in knots for years about ships being tagged separately, and yet. no one gives a shit for these two.

i'm definitely not against popular pairings - i'm all over the main ship in my other fandom - but when it's not something you're into and you can't avoid it, it gets real annoying real quick.
