There used to be this argument that whenever a gay male ship got popular, the characters got “possessed” by the same two personalities, regardless of what they were like in canon. Maybe lesbian ships do that too, I dunno.

This is extremely true for femslash ships, with those personalities being "soft" and "softer." Recently there's been a conscious effort to fix this, but it's mostly been talk and memes. You may have heard the pleas for "toxic yuri," but I haven't seen much real toxic yuri yet.

I've definitely seen that happen in fandoms and it's really disappointing when you're into the ship because you love how the characters are in... you know, the canon itself.
