k so I'm an old dude who has never played a Sonic game (my family didn't let us have a game system, my first was a PS2 I bought at a pawn shop in college), but I'm extremely confused as to how and why a stupid sidescroller in the Mario vein has ended up like this. Is this some sort of uber-meta-fandom thing where someone made a meme in 2002 and it got to the creators and now we have whatever this is? Can someone explain the entire Sonic concept to an old guy who sucked at playing sidescrollers all along?

TL;DR from someone who is a casual fan:

First, there was a Sonic game as a rival to Mario on the Genesis. It sold pretty well, so there were sequels.

Then there are three different cartoons of varying quality, most of them don't really resemble the games. One is a Looney Tunes-esque gag show (Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog), the other is pretty good and on the serious side (usually called SATam because it aired on Saturday mornings), and a third is... really weird where Sonic has a band and long-lost family (Sonic Underground).

Then there was a comic. Two comics, technically, one in the UK (Sonic the Comic) and the American Archie comics. These are different continuities, but the Archie comics are supposed to be a sequel to SATam, but depending on who you ask they'll consider the cartoon and comics separate. (There's also a manga but... It's a gag comic and not really canon, IIRC)

Then there's the new Sonic games in a different art style from Dreamcast onward. This is what most of the fanart you see is about. It's also considered a separate continuity, IIRC? Since "modern" Sonic and Classic Sonic are treated like separate characters.

There's an anime, Sonic X, that's kind of based off the modern games but is also its own separate timeline. There's an OVA but I think that's based off the Genesis classic games too.

Back to the comics. Archie comics ended up having a bunch of different writers, but one of the more infamous ones ended up filing a lawsuit and all the glorified OCs he made for it weren't allowed to be used anymore. (Look up Ken Penders lawsuit for more info, it's a fucking doozy.) So after that, the Archie comics had a complete continuity reboot before it got cancelled.

Now there's the IDW comics, which is a new comic continuity with the same team that the rebooted Archie comics had and is separate from the modern games, I think.

Same anon, I forgot to mention the live-action CGI movie series that's going on now, and two modern cartoons (Sonic Boom and Sonic Prime) that are ALSO their own separate canons, I've just never cared to watch them. Yeah this is a bit of a rabbit hole.

omg THANK YOU. I genuinely did not know about the earlier cartoons nor the completely split continuities. It makes sense knowing that they're all different takes on some older character but also just makes me side-eye comic books all the more.

your diligent service is much appreciated. I might actually look up the lawsuits, drama like that can be weirdly entertaining.

NAYRT but thank you! I’ve also been a little confused the last couple years. I was only passingly familiar with the OG Sonic from Genesis having seen the commercials at the time and even watched a kid I was babysitting play once. I had no idea they’d done so much more beyond that and I thought the modern Sonic look was just an unfortunate case of trying to make a 16 bit video game character from the late 80s appealing to gen alpha movie audiences.
