That all-caps NO ROMANCE is a big limiter. I can find games with low romance, but a lot of them at least have vaguely shippy implications.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-30 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no kidding. I was thinking "did they mean to say otome instead of joseimuke games?" But I guess if they strictly don't want to see romance, it would rule out both.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-31 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
It honestly drives me crazy that it's easy to find media aimed at men that has zero romance, but somehow people seem to think that anything aimed at women MUST contain romance. It's so stupid.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-31 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Why? I don't need stuff to be marketed to me to buy it. Being able to find out it exists and where is plenty.

The otome reddit claims (in their what-not-to-post) "Enstars, UtaPri Shining Live, A3!, Idolish7, Twisted Wonderland and AFTERL!FE are examples of gacha games targeted towards females where there is very little romantic development between the protagonist and the male characters and are therefore not otome games." Dunno if that's helpful to you, nonny.

Debated whether to comment because I don't find Japanese idols "samefaced," and much less "garbage," but I figure it's frustrating not to find what you want.

Eh, as a big i7 player I'm not sure it counts toward what OP is thinking of. You do play as a female protagonist, but it's so easy to forget that she exists, and all the drama is mostly about how the males interact with each other and their own situations. Past the intro she stops being a major part of the plot, especially as the other idol groups get introduced.

I could be misreading the secret, though, and that might be up OP's alley entirely!

IDEK what they're talking about regarding UtaPri. The anime is pretty romantic in the 'none of them are actually going to end up with the heroine but they're ALL in love with her' sense and while the game's story line doesn't have you as a major character, the character lines definitely imply they're into you.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-31 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Twisted Wonderland is pretty romance-free. The game doesn't even specify the gender of the player character (the manga adaptation has used different leads each time, so far we've had two boys and one girl). There are definitely interactions you can read as romantic, but you could read as friendly too.

Kinda OT, but I left the otome game fandom because they got so gatekeepy and pissy about anyone accidentally calling any game that they didn't deem otome, "otome" even in casual conversation. There was also homophobia in with it some of the time, like if you called a romance game with a female MC and even one single token optional female love interest an otome you were wrong.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-31 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
Are there any games like this where you get to play cupid and make the other characters ship with each other instead of you?

(Anonymous) 2024-12-31 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
Oh man, I would love something like that, honestly. Let me hook the OTHER characters up! I don't want to pretend to date any of them but I sure do think some of them should kiss each other.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-31 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I would love this. I like romancing okay but I would love to be able to pair up my companions.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-01 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
oh my god that is a fantastic idea!!

(Anonymous) 2024-12-31 12:58 am (UTC)(link)
There's lots of media out there (not necessarily games though) with mostly male casts, good stories and no romance.

But if you want a female protagonist with no romance at all, I honestly can't think of anything.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-31 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Aren't your pictured examples otome games, though?

I always thought joseimuke was more like cozy games.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-31 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
"Joseimuke" is an umbrella term meaning "anything made for a female audience," so all otome games are joseimuke but not all joseimuke are otome games. BL is technically joseimuke, as are games like Touken Ranbu and Twisted Wonderland where there's no romance but it's a game aimed at women.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-01 10:38 am (UTC)(link)
女性向け (josei muke; josei = woman/women, muke = aimed at .../intended for...) just means geared towards women/aimed at women/intened for women... This could be literally anything, it doesn't even have to be games.

How about in GENERAL no romance? I'm so sick of even shoot-em-up movies and alien invasion shows and all that ALWAYS having some dumb romance side-story that just...adds nothing. Blech.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-31 07:26 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I think there would definitely be a market for that. I'm quite tired of media that sticks something completely formulaic and offputting in just because they assume it "needs" to be there. Are the actors lips going to fall off if they don't kiss at least once per movie, or what?

[personal profile] tabaqui 2024-12-31 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Right? Every actor, just about, whose talked about romance or sexy scenes in movies have said how uncomfortable they are, i'm sure quite a few would be happy to leave them to the wayside.

(Anonymous) 2024-12-31 01:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you considered that it adds something for other people, and that media isn't made solely for you?

(Anonymous) 2024-12-31 02:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Not you acting like one or two movies without an uncecessary shitty romance subplot would be too much to ask when basically 99% of these movies DO have a shitty romance subplot. Maybe media isn't solely made for enjoyers of crappy romance subplots either, ever thought of that?

Don't know if this fits exactly what you're looking for but have you tried Akaya Akashiya Ayakashi no?

It's a non-romantic VN game. It's been officially translated and available on steam:

Maybe Enigma on Steam? The cast is pretty gender-balanced, and one character does have a one-sided crush on the protagonist, but the guys are generally good-looking, there’s an overarching plot, and there are stakes.
