(Anonymous) 2025-01-01 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)Not sure about this. Wicked isn't exactly a story I got passionate about, personally, but I can think of plenty of adaptations where "well, we had to make all these changes and leave tons of things out" just felt like people who didn't appreciate what made the original good cutting the story up in a formulaic way. And then slapping the same title as the unabridged work on it and expecting the good reputation of the one to carry the other.
Also, a lot of the time, the people making adaptations seem to have name recognition and prestige in the industry, but they don't approach work with time and undivided attention. It's like they're always in a big rush. And the quality of what they produce suffers. Aspects of the story that are original and don't have equivalents in a bunch of other stories are in particular danger of being misunderstood or thrown out, for instance. And often what's left is flattened into a samey-er thing than what the original had.
I'm not saying you've got any guarantee of having a better product when they want to sell it to you in two parts, though. Unfortunately not.
