I’m not sure I remember this era. Can anyone help me out with some examples?

I don't remember this as an era, so I can't help you.

I do remember there were always a few extremely boring books written by people who thought kids should act and talk like all wisdom came from The Grown-Ups and the answer to any actual problem was to go running to them. Just like there were always a few extremely boring books rehashing the least obscene parts of the bible, "aimed at children" ... and the only kids who willingly read them were the ones whose parents insisted they were only allowed to read that.

I thought censorship was an abuse of power back then, and I still do.

I do remember stuff from the '80s where children weren't all alone but they were specific to my country and there were very few of them so that wouldn't help. Most cartoons I watched as kid were anime and focused on teens or young adults rather than kids. I don't remember any character being particularly smart XD
