Re: Original works you read/saw *after* seeing an adaptation
(Anonymous) 2025-01-02 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)I watched the Netflix series and had never read the books, I knew of them but had never been interested. But after the show was cancelled I decided to check the books out of my local library to give them a read and see the differences because I enjoy noting changes between mediums, whether I think they were unneeded or worked. I just find that fun.
And overall I preferred the show characters for the first series, especially Mal, in the books he's an asshole and I couldn't stand him but I like show!Mal. For Six of Crows I had the same likes and dislikes, enjoyed all of the characters bar Mattias who I hate with a burning passion in both canons but the story of SoC is more fun that S&B for me.
Overall though I like the books and show near enough the same but liked how the show blended them together, s2 sadly isn't as good as s1 but I think they kinda knew they weren't going to get renewed so threw a lot of show stuff in that season to it's detriment. I still enjoyed the show though but the lead-up in the books is better paced.
Re: Original works you read/saw *after* seeing an adaptation
For me, it probably has something to do with not spending time so deeply in their head. And maybe adaptations just try to make characters more broadly likeable to reach a wider audience.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-03 01:19 am (UTC)(link)Yeah I do think that’s part of it, I don’t hate book Alina but being stuck in her head was… not exactly the most fun, while with show Alina I got to just enjoy her without all that bogging her character down a bit? I think some books work better than others when in a character’s head and for me S&B wasn’t one of them.
