Re: Original works you read/saw *after* seeing an adaptation

At one point in high school I suddenly decided to try and read the original works of some movies I watched as a kid, which is how The Last Unicorn, The Neverending Story and Watership Down all ended up as some of my favorite books. Watership Down was particularly interesting because I watched the movie when I was very young and mostly just remembered being terrified by it, but I absolutely loved the book. Neverending Story the book is so much better than the movie that it kinda ruined the movie for me. The Last Unicorn, while I prefer the book, I think the movie is -- outside of some unfortunate singing moments -- the best possible adaptation that book could ask for, it's really a great example of how to adapt a book to a movie without losing the book's spirit.

I read The Neverending Story first and then was very disappointed by the movie (that everyone around me raved about).

But I’ve never read or seen the other two you mentioned. I think I might give them a go, even as an adult.

The Neverending Story movie does have some really good moments that I appreciate -- it's got a nice dark tone for a kids movie, the rock muncher scene (that's not in the book) is genuinely affecting, the Gmork scene freaked me out as a kid and I just like the visual of the world being slowly consumed by the Nothing. But the movie totally whiffs the ending and obviously skipping the entire second half of the book (where all the actual important thematic stuff is) is where it falls apart. I still have some fondness for the movie but I'll take the book over it any day, though I do kinda hope with the current nostalgia-bait culture we might get a proper adaptation some day.

da

Wholeheartedly agreed.

(As an aside, I was unironically in love with Gmork after reading the book.)
