Re: Not liking eggs is infuriating
(Anonymous) 2025-01-05 02:01 am (UTC)(link)I get a lot of dirty looks for not liking them, especially as a Brit. How dare I.
Re: Not liking eggs is infuriating
(Anonymous) 2025-01-05 07:02 am (UTC)(link)fortunately, you can get around never having an egg, as obsessed as Japan is with eggs. pics on menus are accurate so you can order easily, and if it's somewhere like a soba or ramen place that orders by vending-machine tickets, use a phone translation app to check all the words and make sure there's no eggs. it's usually very, very difficult to get customization on orders (adding, subtracting, or substituting) unless you have a genuine allergy, so it's easier on you and on the restaurants to just order something without egg in the first place. so, no oyakodon, no omurice, careful ordering okonomiyaki, soba, udon, and ramen, and you should be okay at most set meal restaurants and yoshoku/family places. It's rare to get ramen without a hard-boiled egg (onsen tamago) but if you have someone with you who loves eggs, just pass it off to them.
About the only real issue is if you're going anywhere like a ryokan for a first-class kaiseki meal, it would be hella rude to not eat egg if they give you one. But, I don't remember ours ever serving eggs, not even tamago (the omelet roll, I love them). If you get served a raw egg on the side with wagyu beef, it's meant as a condiment to dip in, so you can leave it.
