Not liking eggs is infuriating

(Anonymous) 2025-01-05 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Trying to find savory breakfast stuff that I can just throw in the microwave or something and there is NOTHING without egg.

plain unflavoured instant oatmeal made with any flavour soup stock and seasoned to taste. I like mine with chicken soup stock and I still add milk to it to cool it down. Eggless and tasty. Hope you find something you like.

Ever considered eating not-breakfast foods for breakfast? My breakfast today was clam chowder and very satisfying.

Hello, fellow egg-hater! I feel your pain. The smell, the taste, the texture. The amount of recipes that are 'and then mix in some egg,' no, thanks. We're planning a trip to Japan this year and they are big on raw egg, understandable because they're of such high quality there. So every other recipe I try to make in preparation goes 'and then you SLAP AN EGG IN IT'

I get a lot of dirty looks for not liking them, especially as a Brit. How dare I.

ooo where in Japan are you going?

fortunately, you can get around never having an egg, as obsessed as Japan is with eggs. pics on menus are accurate so you can order easily, and if it's somewhere like a soba or ramen place that orders by vending-machine tickets, use a phone translation app to check all the words and make sure there's no eggs. it's usually very, very difficult to get customization on orders (adding, subtracting, or substituting) unless you have a genuine allergy, so it's easier on you and on the restaurants to just order something without egg in the first place. so, no oyakodon, no omurice, careful ordering okonomiyaki, soba, udon, and ramen, and you should be okay at most set meal restaurants and yoshoku/family places. It's rare to get ramen without a hard-boiled egg (onsen tamago) but if you have someone with you who loves eggs, just pass it off to them.

About the only real issue is if you're going anywhere like a ryokan for a first-class kaiseki meal, it would be hella rude to not eat egg if they give you one. But, I don't remember ours ever serving eggs, not even tamago (the omelet roll, I love them). If you get served a raw egg on the side with wagyu beef, it's meant as a condiment to dip in, so you can leave it.

I feel you. I will eat eggs but only very specifically cooked and even then sometimes they gross me out and I can't do it. I ended up just doing a protein/meal replacement shake for breakfast. Boring amd not the best tasting but gets the job done.

I can give you a recipe if you like sausage...

SA I'll just go ahead and leave it here. It's customizable & my favorite egg-free microwavable breakfast sandwich.

You need:
- purchased bread of your choice (I like English muffins or medium size rolls) x 6
- meat: cooked sausage patties, cooked bacon, sandwich ham/turkey/whatever
- sliced cheese of your choice
- olive oil or 4 tbsp melted butter (I prefer butter because life is short.)
- optional but worth it: Everything bagel seasoning

Preheat oven to 350 & line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Half your bread and lay out bottoms, three by three, close together/touching.

Put a portion of meat on each piece of bread. Then spread cheese slices all over. Top with bread tops (adding condiments if you like).

Brush the oil or melted butter generously on the outside of tops and sprinkle with seasoning.

Bake 10-12 minutes and then cool.

You now have 6 delicious sandwiches you can wrap individually in parchment paper and stick in a big plastic bag in the freezer. Take one out as desired, wrap in paper towel, and nuke 1 minute.

this is also good with biscuits* or bagels

*I mean American biscuits, not British

Yeah, a lot have eggs in them, but there are some breakfast sandwiches that are just bread and meat, Jimmy Dean does sausage and biscuit, chicken and biscuit, and sausage and pancake ones (https://www.jimmydean.com/products/sandwiches/). They also have some biscuits and gravy (https://www.jimmydean.com/products/biscuits-gravy/), a biscuit and gravy breakfast bowl, and little sausage and pancakes combos (https://www.jimmydean.com/products/morning-combos/).

It takes a toaster oven rather than a microwave, but I used to have a melted cheese sandwich every morning

you don't see toaster ovens as often as you used to

nayrt - I still have one, and love it. They're very handy when I just want to make a small portion of hashbrowns, tater tots, etc. and not heat up the whole kitchen. Toasted cheese sandwiches are great in a toaster oven, too.

oh, they're great for that, no doubts.

I used to make a potato casserole for breakfast.

Cut potatoes into small cubes, lightly oil them, flavor with salt and pepper and roast at 425 degrees F for 20 minutes. Turn into a lightly oiled 13x9 pan.
While the potatoes are roasting, crumble sausage into a skillet and cook until completely browned. Mix in with the potatoes in the 13x9 pan. Sprinkle cheese on top and bake for 10 minutes. Cut into portions and put into freezer. I microwave for 1 minutes, stir, and evaluate how much more time it needs (30 secs to 1.5 minutes) depending on the microwave. I’ll also add more cheese when it comes out of the microwave.

That’s the basic recipe. I like to cut up peppers and stir fry them, then add to the casserole. Sometimes we finely chop an onion and cook it with the sausage.
For those that so like eggs, you can fry or scramble eggs and serve on top of the casserole.

Oh that's fantastic. Never thought about roasting them and then adding to a casserole. Screencapping. Thanks, anon!

Welcome! I just like my potatoes cooked thoroughly, which they are often not if they’re added raw and baked. I also have texture issues with grated potatoes, hence the cubes.

Like... frozen convenience food, or stuff you make yourself? Because it'd probably help if you expanded your definition of what foods count as breakfast foods. Frozen burritos are quick and easy, and you can also make them yourself and freeze for later if you want more control over the ingredients/seasoning.

Biscuits/croissants/english muffins plus ham/sausage/bacon and cheese.

Dinner leftovers can make a good breakfast.

Look up recipes for congee where you can customize it however you want, make large batches and reheat as needed.

Re: Not liking eggs is infuriating

(Anonymous) 2025-01-05 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
My breakfasts for the last while have been frozen microwave bean and cheese burritos with salsa, or veggie-bean soup with fresh spinach and fresh mozzarella stirred in when I reheat it. Okay, and sometimes fruit and yogurt and coffee, which isn't savory, but still, no eggs. I don't hate eggs, but I honestly couldn't tell you the last time I ate eggs, especially if they were recognizable as eggs rather than in pancakes or something.

I would say you could do garbanzo-flour pancakes either topped with veggies or with veggies and spices stirred into the batter, but sometimes people use garbanzo flour as an egg substitute and idk if it would be too similar.

Good luck finding something you like and tl;dr: eat whatever you want for breakfast, don't limit yourself to "breakfast food."

I just eat sandwiches for breakfast. No cooking required.

In the UK it is the same if you don't like baked beans. They put them in everything, but they give me the boak.

They're OK but I loathe that breakfast foods are always loaded with fucking eggs.
