The "you should just adopt" line bugs me so much because 1. if someone says they don't want kids, they don't want kids. and 2. adoption is incredibly expensive and difficult (at least in the US). Like I actually tried to adopt for years and it didn't work out and is a huge heartbreak for me, so it just pisses me off when people drop that as an option like you can just go to Target and pick yourself up a kid.

I've mostly gotten that from my parents' conservative/fundamentalist friends who genuinely think that there is an innate need to have babies as a life purpose in all women. Pisses me off every time.

You can just go to Target and pick up a kid. But you really, really, really shouldn't. Or if you do then you better have a plan to get out of state real quick.
