I have seen people on an individual level decide they can't write the rich or powerful, but they seem to think that is a personal thing.

Rich characters' actions don't affect real world consequences.

Acting outside the law with no regard for how it effects other people? The anti's LOVE them.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-07 05:55 pm (UTC)(link)
They are Luigi Mangione stans.

Nah, he's a patsy. What you mean is the CEO killer, who acted outside the law with special regard for how it effected other people. So, no. Not the same.

There's still an appeal to wish fulfillment.

I've seen this debate more than once, but it never seems to stick for long.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-07 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
yes, there absolutely was discourseTM going around

Fictional rich people are fun because the sky's the limit!

I just watched a movie based on Doris Duke, and the shit she got up to, yo. (Some of it admittedly bad, like getting out of a vehicular homicide charge) but at least she rehabbed buildings and built gardens instead of shitposting on Twitter all day like Elon Cunt Musk.

I saw a post saying that Bruce Wayne needs to be a millionaire because there’s no ethical way to be a billionaire.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-07 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
I read that too, it made good arguments.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-07 10:44 am (UTC)(link)
There is no ethical way to be a millionaire either, or just low level rich, or middle class, or anything above subsistence farmer really. So, maybe cool your jets here. There is no ethical way to have jets burning either.

That actually makes plenty of sense. Besides, when you make too many gadgets that could only be funded by military funding, it kind of undercuts whenever if all Batman is are his tools and money; or his intelligence and raw determination.

Not to mention having billionaires as villains, Lex Luthor being a prominent example, would also let Batman be sort of an underdog to them.

Eh, I think all cop shows are copaganda and we need a massive overhaul of how the American justice system works and is set up, but I still write for my buddy-cop slash ship.

It's fic. I can understand someone saying "Oh, nope, not doing xyz because of real world politics about m," and that's cool, but berating people for what they write is literally never good and it never works. If someone wants to write about fictional billionaires, I won't judge.

I'm much less interested in reading about Tony Stark or Bruce Wayne. But I'm not going to give anyone shit about it. Because I'm not an anti. Or an asshole.

Antis tend to anti-something because they like something else. So they only reason they'd go all Voltron on Bruce Wayne fans is if they wanted The Flash or Martian Manhunter to get more attention. So, uh, check in again after the Superman movie.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-07 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
The answer, as always, is because it's fanfiction. None of it's real. No one's getting paid. So do what you want. Write billionaires doing good with their ill-gotten fortunes. It'll have as much impact on the real world as writing them abusing their money and power to hunt toddlers in Thailand, which is to say, very little.

I agree with you. But I think people really should have stuck to these guns with all the things antis try to get ridiculous about. "But it's pedophilia!" Cool. "But it's racism!" Fine. "But this character being shipped with the lead tried to rape her!" Right. In a free story.

I am only ever going to be negatively impressed by people who try to play-act at morality through fiction, and try to pretend if everyone else won't do it with them, we're condoning awfulness.

It's never too late because the conflict is ongoing. But "I'll speak out against cancelling a fictional rich guy" seems like the shortest and least of the hills to defend.
