Yeah, a lot of people actually quit watching the show mid season 4 for the same reasons as you. while a lot of new people started watching it because other people like the apocalypse arc a lot and were recommanding it to anyone.
For me the perfect balance of main story arc and MOTW was in season 2 and none of the following season were as good as that.

I haven't done a rewatch of any episodes for years, so my memories may have softened a bit. But from what I recall, while the first season was uneven, it was kind of charming in its own figuring-things-out way. Season 2 was good. I liked season 3 up until they dropped a bunch of things (through no fault of their own). I liked certain things about season 4, and there were scenes that were really good, but I kept expecting them pick up the threads that had been dropped or explain/expand on things in a way I found satisfying. And that didn't happen. That, plus the angels thing slowly drained my interest in watching away.
