OP, I felt the same about Nyssa's hair. (Dr. Who companion, Peter Davison era.) I wanted hair like Nyssa's so bad. Then one day I realized -- Nyssa (or Elaine, or Carrie) doesn't have that kind of hair, either. Those big bouncy curls on screen are produced and maintained by a bevy of professional stylists, which most folks can't reproduce in their own homes.

I figure we can admire and enjoy the fantasy, but trying to live up to it is an exercise in frustration.

I never watched past season 5 because that whole arc was so well done and left me feeling more satisfaction than curiosity over whatever might come next.

Ben Edlund's "On the Head of a Pin" stands out as my favorite episode and one of the most masterfully written TV series episodes I've ever seen.

I know there was a time when I was genuinely invested in Sam and Dean’s whole thing. But I can’t resurrect any shred of that. It’s like it happened to someone else.

Now, if you asked me about the best parts of Supernatural, it would be secondary or even tertiary characters and mostly ones that didn’t start showing up until the 5th season.

Not sure what happened to me, but I guess I’m not thinking about the show like proper fans do.

It still had major, major problems, so I wouldn't call it perfect TV, but those 5 seasons were certainly very together and mostly well-done. I started season 6 and then...I just couldn't be bothered any more.

I stopped watching after season 4. That writer's strike in season 3 and then budget issues in season 4 took a toll, and though I kind of liked Castiel (and Gabriel), I was not really a fan the angels coming into play in a big way - a lot of them were exasperating and the arc was frustrating to me, and I didn't want to continue with that.

As possibly the biggest fan of SPN on F!S (I'm kind of obsessed and it's been my main fandom for 14 years now): YEP.
When I do rewatch I watch the entirely of season 1 to 5 and then skip entire arcs of the following seasons and just watch the lone episodes that I like.
I think season 6-7 are the absolute worst of the entire show because they seriously had no idea what to do with the characters. From season 8 onwards it recuperates, especially with Castiel, and there are some legitimately good portions of some seasons. I love season 11 and Amara as a villain and I absolutely adore the mindfuckery of season 15 (up until a point because fuck the finale lol) even if the show was seriously kind of awful to watch at that point.
I'm still happy that I was invested up until the end and that I watched almost every episode week by week, but I understand why people just watch and/or recommend just season 1-5. That's when the show was GOOD. Later on it's just... Supernatural. You watch it because you like the brothers interacting with the other characters. There are a lot of secondary characters that are awesome and memorable from season 6 onwards, way more than season 1-5, but if you only care about Sam and Dean... MEH.
It's the same story between them over and over again, lol

Not gonna lie this is why [insert minority] characters feel off in a lot of well-intentioned media created by authors who are let's say, naive?

You got your black character with no other black friends or community of their own, your latino character with no latino friends or community of their own, your disabled character with seemingly only able-bodied friends, your queer character with seemingly only straight friends... it gets weird when you think about it.
