Having a plan from the start only makes it good if the planned ending is good. The season 5 finale was lazy, morally craven, formulaic bullshit. They get the literal voice of god to do a voice over whining about fans not appreciating the writer's genius enough. It was pathetic.

The idea that there WAS a plan for the first 1-5 is a myth. They didn't even have a plan for the continuity between episodes, as they didn't have a show bible.
While I LIKE the ending a lot more than you do, I don't think it's an example of having a plan from the start as SPN never had a plan longer than one season at a time.
