I never watched past season 5 because that whole arc was so well done and left me feeling more satisfaction than curiosity over whatever might come next.

Ben Edlund's "On the Head of a Pin" stands out as my favorite episode and one of the most masterfully written TV series episodes I've ever seen.

OH man, that is one of my absolute favorite episodes too. So much characterization that works so well. I love it.

I watched a bit past season 5 and while, like OP, I enjoyed a couple of episodes, the story ending at Swan Song was something special. It ended there, as far as I'm concerned.

I know there was a time when I was genuinely invested in Sam and Dean’s whole thing. But I can’t resurrect any shred of that. It’s like it happened to someone else.

Now, if you asked me about the best parts of Supernatural, it would be secondary or even tertiary characters and mostly ones that didn’t start showing up until the 5th season.

Not sure what happened to me, but I guess I’m not thinking about the show like proper fans do.

It still had major, major problems, so I wouldn't call it perfect TV, but those 5 seasons were certainly very together and mostly well-done. I started season 6 and then...I just couldn't be bothered any more.

I stopped watching after season 4. That writer's strike in season 3 and then budget issues in season 4 took a toll, and though I kind of liked Castiel (and Gabriel), I was not really a fan the angels coming into play in a big way - a lot of them were exasperating and the arc was frustrating to me, and I didn't want to continue with that.

Yeah, a lot of people actually quit watching the show mid season 4 for the same reasons as you. while a lot of new people started watching it because other people like the apocalypse arc a lot and were recommanding it to anyone.
For me the perfect balance of main story arc and MOTW was in season 2 and none of the following season were as good as that.

I haven't done a rewatch of any episodes for years, so my memories may have softened a bit. But from what I recall, while the first season was uneven, it was kind of charming in its own figuring-things-out way. Season 2 was good. I liked season 3 up until they dropped a bunch of things (through no fault of their own). I liked certain things about season 4, and there were scenes that were really good, but I kept expecting them pick up the threads that had been dropped or explain/expand on things in a way I found satisfying. And that didn't happen. That, plus the angels thing slowly drained my interest in watching away.

As possibly the biggest fan of SPN on F!S (I'm kind of obsessed and it's been my main fandom for 14 years now): YEP.
When I do rewatch I watch the entirely of season 1 to 5 and then skip entire arcs of the following seasons and just watch the lone episodes that I like.
I think season 6-7 are the absolute worst of the entire show because they seriously had no idea what to do with the characters. From season 8 onwards it recuperates, especially with Castiel, and there are some legitimately good portions of some seasons. I love season 11 and Amara as a villain and I absolutely adore the mindfuckery of season 15 (up until a point because fuck the finale lol) even if the show was seriously kind of awful to watch at that point.
I'm still happy that I was invested up until the end and that I watched almost every episode week by week, but I understand why people just watch and/or recommend just season 1-5. That's when the show was GOOD. Later on it's just... Supernatural. You watch it because you like the brothers interacting with the other characters. There are a lot of secondary characters that are awesome and memorable from season 6 onwards, way more than season 1-5, but if you only care about Sam and Dean... MEH.
It's the same story between them over and over again, lol

Having a plan from the start only makes it good if the planned ending is good. The season 5 finale was lazy, morally craven, formulaic bullshit. They get the literal voice of god to do a voice over whining about fans not appreciating the writer's genius enough. It was pathetic.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-08 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
The idea that there WAS a plan for the first 1-5 is a myth. They didn't even have a plan for the continuity between episodes, as they didn't have a show bible.
While I LIKE the ending a lot more than you do, I don't think it's an example of having a plan from the start as SPN never had a plan longer than one season at a time.

Agreed. I didn’t hate season 7 but I still dropped the show during jt because the first episode where they essentially said “you can forget everything in season six, we won’t refer back to any of that again” that really hammered home that the well plotted show I fell in love with was dead

(Anonymous) 2025-01-08 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I treasure my memories of seasons 1-5. I tried like 3 episodes over the next 10 seasons and I'll stop there.
