I don't know how to leave comments on fics I like

(Anonymous) 2025-01-11 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Well, I know HOW but I don't really know what. I don't ever have any deep thoughts or things I particularly love. And leaving, "This fic was good/great." sounds stupid. I just know sometimes when I am done with a fic, I love it.

I leave pretty basic comments. “I loved this! Great characterization or fun/unique take on this trope and this part was cute/tense/whatever.” I’ll also say if I bookmarked it or sometimes even mention if I downloaded it to put on my kindle. And some fics kinda stick with me so I’ll say that if it did.

Yep, this is pretty much what I do… say that it was good, mention one or two things to compliment specifically (the fic’s premise, a fun scene, how they matched a character’s voice, etc)

It still feels awkward to me sometimes, but I’ve gotten pretty good responses from fic writers

You can also just leave hearts! I have a few people who read every chapter and leave me a pile of hearts as their comment.

Pick out one thing you liked! It doesn't have to be deep. "I liked this fic and I especially loved Montgomery talking about rare cacti." Done.

You really can't think of any particular scene, line, plot point, character portrayal that you liked in the fic? Hmmm. The fics I really enjoyed usually have something specific that struck me about it, but then I'm used to thinking more analytically about what I liked/disliked about media and pondering why. (It helps me figure out what other media to consume, or to avoid.)

You could also just tell the author how it made you feel - that you loved it, it was a refreshing take, a comfort read, it really pulled you in and you got lost in the world, etc.

You can just go "OMG I loved this!" or a row of some hearts. It doesn't have to be deep.
If it's a sad fic post a row of crying emojis, on a funny one the cry-laughing emoji. That should cover your bases.

If you want to be a bit fancier, you can quote a line that made you laugh and say that it made you laugh/chortle/giggle/apply relevant verb. Or just add laughing emojis. Or go "HAHAHAHA"

If there's a line that struck you as particularly in-character, that's also a thing authors usually like to hear. So you can quote it and go "your [character X] voice is so good!"

Mix and match the above three as you want and you'll usually have a comment that the majority of authors love to get. And it's okay to be hyperbolic - you will not be interrogated later if you REALLY loved the fic or if you maybe just "liked" it after all. So feel free to say "I loved it" on every fic you liked enough to comment.

Don't worry. If you leave a "nice fic" comment then you'll be complained at as rude for not providing more indepth responses and should've just stuck to Kudos. But if you leave an indepth response, then you'll be complained about as unsatisfiable and nitpicky, and told you should've just stuck to Kudoses. You can't win on this one, but you can choose not to play.

ude for not providing more indepth responses and should've just stuck to Kudos
Completely earnest here: I've never seen this. IDK, I'm happy even to see the hit count go up because it means that someone is reading my fic. I'll be very happy if they leave kudos and even happier if they comment. It's just a hobby, a fun one, why would I complain about the comments people leave on my works?

I have literally never had anyone respond to my comments with complaints.

And the only comments I’ve seen that get that are requests to change the fic or write something else. (“Could you write this fic for A/C instead of A/B?”)

If you hang around fic writing comms, you will see some writers complaining about the comments they get, but I believe they represent a very small minority.

I've seen comments like this pop up as a justification for why it's best not to comment at all on fics even if you like them and have something nice to say about them, but I've never seen this behavior demonstrated. Much like the "author who holds chapters hostage for comments", I suspect it's highly anecdotal boogeyman stuff, not at all representative of how the majority of authors behave re: comments. And it's very silly.

But... I suppose it makes the people who hungrily, eagerly consume fanfic on a regular basis without leaving a single comment back feel sooooo much better about their decision. Funny, that.

Yeah, I've seen those assholes so I comment out of spite. They don't want my comments, they can fucking block me. Assholes don't get to impact my decision to squee with people.

I literally just say "I loved this/this was fun/etc! Thanks for sharing!"

As a fan writer, I love comments that say "This fic was good/great." ^_^ I'm checking my email and the last three comments that I received and made me smile are:
1) random keymash that end in "very hot, ty!!"
2) multiple heart eye emoji, a few hearts, sparkle emoji, "YES!"
3) "OHNOGOSH MAH BABIES" followed by a lot of crying kaomoji.

I'm a talker, so my enthusiastic comments tend to start at 500 words, but sometimes I just quote random lines and say why I liked them. Or I write how long I was up reading that story, what it made me feel, if I'm gonna be thinking about it for the rest of the day... Stuff like that.

Anything is good TBH. Even "I loved this" or an emoji is good. If an author can't appreciate your comment, it wasn't that you did anything wrong.

Try to have fun with it <3
