(Anonymous) 2025-01-11 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)But yes, there are so many people who try to deny that they could ever be homeless by making homelessness a moral failing: Homeless people are obviously Bad and I am Good therefore I can never be homeless.
I think it's a bit more complicated than that. The people I know who complain about homeless people complain about the ones that have drug addiction problems and have destroyed all relationships because of it, so they have nowhere else to go, and in that case they see it as "a choice" so it's "their own fault". To them, that's different than someone who lost their job (and their home because of it) and is couch surfing with family members/friends...that person is technically "homeless" too but doesn't have the same connotation to them as the 'drug addicts/criminals that live on the streets', those people aren't bad or to blame, they're just 'good, hard-working people who are down on their luck'.
(Obviously none of it's right, and I don't agree with it, but I live in a conservative area with a lot of bootstrappy people so I hear these sorts of complaints a lot.)

(Anonymous) 2025-01-11 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)Wow, okay. That's pretty crazy. I think with the people I know that don't judge the second group is because they realize that it could be them on the other end of the layoff (although they blame the layoffs on immigrants taking their jobs, so it's not like they're smarter or better people than the people who blame both groups or anything, they just think differently for whatever reason).

(Anonymous) 2025-01-11 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)Yeah, I live in an area that loves to say it's uber liberal. And it is very welcoming to gays and trans and the entire alphabet really. But their attitudes towards the homeless are absolutely disgusting. The delusion isn't immigrants for us, it's the violation of the illusion that we're all safe. Every complaint is about having to see the homeless because it breaks the illusion. Absolutely no consideration for how they got there, because if they're homeless it HAS to be because they're drug addicted (so it's easy not to be homeless, see???). And when you point out that everyone you know is closer to being homeless than secure, they just say that they're not stupid enough to get addicted to drugs, so they'll never be homeless. And if you point out that a large portion of the homeless aren't addicted to drugs, they plug their ears and shout at you. It's the one thing I hate about living here.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-11 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)I think it makes them feel safer. It reminds me of the old 'what was she wearing?' question about women who are raped, and the victim blaming that happens with people who are murdered. If you tell yourself that that woman was only raped because she was wearing revealing clothing, or that person was only murdered because they hung out with shady people, then that means you can't be raped or murdered because you don't do those things. Acknowledging that things can be completely random and horrible things can happen to people who did absolutely nothing to "deserve" them terrifies the hell out of some people and they just can't handle it. So they come up with reasons why it can't/won't happen to them, and it makes them feel better.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-11 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)Exactly so. Maybe I'm just getting old, but lately I've had less and less empathy for those people because they're just sticking their heads in the sand in the face of human suffering and not correcting the system that perpetuates the suffering. In their quest to feel safe they're making themselves (and me) less safe and I'm getting angry at them. So when the "impossible" happens, I now just feel that schadenfreude and laugh at them.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-11 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)I totally get that. I sometimes try to empathize with them, but I won't lie, I've definitely laughed at them before.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-12 05:48 am (UTC)(link)yeah :/
I've actually had people tell me they don't care about anything outside their own circle... and it's like... if you never care about anything outside your own circle, who do you expect to protect your circle, and your right to have a circle? If you don't care about the little guy (who may be in a more vulnerable position), why should the little guy care about you when you have misfortune?
There's a reason the poem "First They Came..." exists. They're acting it out in real time and it's goddamn infuriating.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-11 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)Being homeless is hard, really hard, it is emotionally destroying, and eventually every single human being who has to go through it will, if they are stuck in it for long enough, turn to something to turn their brain off for a little while. It is the only way to cope. I know, you don't believe it. You don't want to believe it. If you believed that, you might have to do something to help end homelessness instead of ignoring it as hard as you can.
