some sets i had, for which I found the videos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2K7ac2TJK0 & https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u8pKqdZxuJU I loved the forklift so much!!! I think mine was a little bit different than the one in the video though...
it's basically lego, but with mechanical parts. some of the sets also had small moving engines inside and you can build some pretty crazy things with those.

I have no idea if they are popular in the usa or even where I'm from. I'm one of the only persons I know that grew up with this stuff. idk my parents were awesome and bought a lot of stuff like this for me, even if I was a little girl in a pretty conservative place and we were kind of poor.

I'd only ever heard the name before in a British context (I'm American)

It seems they are an English company, so yeah, it checks out!
I'm from an European country and we just call them meccano here, but as I said, they are not very famous even here... I never see them in toy shops nowadays.
