I'm... not sure what you mean by "scammed."

Think of politics as theater.

Some people put on an act for the public and may appear to be on opposing sides, but behind closed doors, they're good friends who get along well.

That said, I don't think that's what's happening here. I seriously doubt Obama is friends with Trump. He just knows how to be civil with assholes.

I hope you're right. By "scammed," I mean sometimes I wonder if Obama's messaging of hope and justice was a smokescreen for a corporation-friendly agenda.

I think he meant it at first. I can believe a very smart, relatively young and inexperienced, one-term Senator with a solid popular mandate would think that he can go and change things.

I don't think he was expecting to be obstructed so hard, or that so many established politicians, in his own party even, would be willing to shoot themselves and the system and the people in the foot to stop any change from happening.

It didn't help that we Americans didn't turn out in 2010 and 2014 in the numbers he would've needed.

Or the whole Citizens United ruling, which, by the way, happened the year after he was first sworn in. I'm sure that was a coincidence. /s

Fuck Turtle McFuckface for blocking Obama's SC nominee too.

+1

a good politician knows how to be civil with others. Obama's just being civil, not sucking up.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-19 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I think at some point people need to stop being civil.

On the other hand I don't think Obama is the one that should, or need to be the person to start. Racists would literally go wild about it and he'd face a lot more threats to his person about it than for example Biden would.

Agreed, but also "literally at a funeral" is not the time for people to stop being civil. Passive your aggressive until after the burial.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-20 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Right, hence at some point. Not at a funeral specifically. Lol

(Anonymous) 2025-01-20 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
That's fair. OP was annoyed about Obama being civil to Trump at Jimmy Carter's funeral specifically, so it was more of a general disclaimer.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-20 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Totally agree. Like the other person said, maybe a funeral isn't the time to do it, and like you said, Obama isn't the person to do it because he gets enough shit from racists already.

But in general, I'm so sick of the "when they go low" bullshit from Democrats. Like eventually, you've gotta realize that "being the bigger/better person" just doesn't work when you're fighting against people who don't play by the rules and have zero interest in being decent people. You've got to fight them on their level and use their own tactics against them, otherwise you're never going to get anywhere.

(Anonymous) 2025-01-20 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Absolutely - it shouldn't be on Obama at all.

One of the things that keeps coming back to me is the thought that this whole thing is somebody's lesson to learn. Obama doesn't strike me as someone who would be high on that list, or on the list at all (unless it's the general "Democrats need to connect with the working class" kind of thing. Then maybe yeah).

I think a lot of folks are starting to realize how good they had it, and maybe how privileged they were overall. I hope they will start using their privilege for good, going forward.
