Re: Things that make you irrationally angry at retailers when shopping

There's a grocery store chain where I live that has some special type of membership, and apparently reserves certain checkout lanes for them. Those lanes are almost always completely empty, and before I knew it was for ~special~ people only (there's a small sign with a symbol next to those lanes, which I didn't notice until it was pointed out to me), I went through one and had no problems. The next time I tried to do it I got yelled at by this bitchy old lady who said it was only for people with the membership and that the cash register "literally wouldn't work" if you weren't a member. I said "oh, that's funny, I didn't know that last week and went through one and nobody said anything and it worked fine" and she just made disgusted noises and walked away.

The next time I went shopping, I went to a different location of the same chain and decided I would try one of those lanes just to see what would happen. No issues, so I casually asked the cashier about it. She said "well, we offer these lanes as a convenience to the members so they don't have to wait in long lines if the store is packed, but technically anyone can use them, and if the store isn't that busy, it's no problem at all".

And like, sure, have your special lanes if you want, but advertise it with something other than a tiny sign that most people would miss, and don't be so rude and lie about it. If the one lady had been decent and said "I'm sorry, this lane is reserved only for members" in a nice way instead of lying and having a power trip over it, I would've gone to another one with no problem.
