Yeah, I'm just sitting here like... has OP never received a gift from a well-meaning friend or relative that clearly had thought put into it but just didn't quite hit the mark? Sometimes it happens, and when you're the gift-giver, you just sort of shrug and go "oh well" because you tried your best.

Well, sure. But let's not pretend that taking the time and effort to write someone a fanfic based on their stated preferences isn't more an investment than simply trying real hard to buy the right present for a person. Having a gift you created with care is always going to hurt more than regular gift-giving.

Is OP feeling an awful lot of turbulent emotions? Yes. Should they maybe sit out exchanges in the future? Maybe. But it doesn't hurt to have a little compassion for OP right now. Everyone rolling their eyes should ask themselves if they want to be the kind of person who kicks a person when they're down, or enjoys rubbing salt in the wound, because is that how they'd like to be treated if they were upset at something important to them? (Because remember, everything you care deeply about is bound to be considered trivial by someone else.)

DA

Pretty much. This can be an unfortunate situation in which nobody sucks but also nobody wins. Sometimes blind matchups just end up that way through nobody's fault.
