Intersex isn't a third sex, though. They absolutely matter and should be counted, but it's a sexual development disorder. With the except of disorders that result in ambiguous genitalia, most intersex people are still AMAB or AFAB.

There's always been intersex people. Before the operations they lived as is. Now parents pick their gender. A person with M anf F genes and hormones is the third sex.

Because a baby is born with a penis, or a vulva. If there's something in between, there's a medical problem. It's the same way doctors determine whether a child has the expected number of limbs.

Visually sexing most animals is not rocket science: kids who've had the matter explained to them can determine if their puppy is a boy-dog or a girl-dog, with just as much certainty as a vet doing a visual check.

They are mostly AMAB and AFAB because either their parents choose one (or are forced into choosing one) or they visually appear to be male or female and are assumed to be that sex. For example, a lot of androgen insensitive people look entirely female and would never have known without modern science, they just would have thought they were an infertile woman. Many intersex people identify as male or female, but they don't divide neatly into male and female biologically and it drives transphobes insane.

They can't wrap their heads around 'gender is a spectrum,' I don't expect they'll be able to understand 'sex is a spectrum' too.

'Third sex' as OP said is not accurate because that implies there's some kind of uniform thing that fits all intersex people. That's like saying 'there's three races, white black and everyone else' lol

'More than the standard two sexes' is the more correct idea

No it's not. Just like humans are still bipedal despite some people getting born with more or less than two legs. A tiny number of deviations from the norm doesn't mean the norm doesn't exist anymore.

Because deviations from the two sexes do not mean there are more than two sexes, it just means there are two sexes with some deviations.

Sex is not a spectrum.

Sex is about reproduction, and is determined by gametes. Females have large gametes; males have small ones. There is no third gamete. There is no in-between gamete.

Every person with a DSD has one of the two types of gametes, or possesses the organs for producing one type of gamete (although their specific disorder may prevent actual production). There are no intersex people with both. There are no intersex people who produce some sort of hybrid gamete.

Sex may be what you say, with occasional deviations. But sex and gender are not the same thing. Gender absolutely is a spectrum.

We can do this all day. For every article stating that sex in humans isn't binary, there is at the very least one or two papers that say the opposite. Again, there is no scientific consensus on this matter.

All intersex people are male or female, though, not something in between. There is no third gamete, nor is there an in-between one.

I think maybe I am or was intersex?? I transitioned when I was 18 so maybe I'm just regular trans now. Idk the right terms. Sorry if this sounds odd. I'm not in contact with my family anymore so I'll never know what was going on but I was rather physically androgynous since birth and my parents used to fight in front of me over whether I was a boy or a girl, no idea wtf was going on, I transitioned as soon as I was old enough to the gender that I already looked like since I was a kid because it was easier that way. Anyway I feel uncertain where the news leaves ppl like me. Not all my documents match and I rely on trans healthcare for my medical issues. I support trans ppl as well and don't think that ppl who transition because they want to change to match their identity have less of a right than me to transition, just personally I often get a feeling that conservatives think ppl like me don't exist.
