My contention has always been that Shatner needed a cowriter. There are the bones of a good story there, though it retreads ground from TOS in some ways. The exploration of pain and trauma ("I need my pain") is good and Shatner clearly understood the dynamics between the main 3 very well but the humor is juvenile (marshmelons is a good example but there's also Scotty knocking himself out on his own ship) and the plot is what it is.
