Any threads for explicitly non-fandom politics or non-fandom political news should go here.

So many clients are calling us in panic. Quite a lot of them have plenty of reason. Some of them aren't at risk, but are scared anyway. And causing mass panic and potentially self deportation is exactly what the government wants.

Now I'm hearing about threats to raid attorneys offices on charges of fraud. And then using as an excuse to get client files. And to block access to legal help for immigrants.

Not to mention they are telling nonprofits that basically if they want any government funds at all they can't do immigration work, even if none of that money goes to immigration.

It is hard not to lose it to the panic and focus on doing what I can. I know it isn't going to help anyone for me to fall apart. But I'm getting so worried for some of my clients.

Gods, I just want him and his fucking toadies to die in a fucking fire.

I do too. I've never let myself feel that way about anyone other than the humans who abused my cat. But him. Him and his worshippers can just die.

YUP. Pretty sure i could pull the switch or trigger or press the button and have zero guilt about it. He is just so fucking foul.

Thanks. Mostly worried for my clients. But have to remind myself and my paralegals that we have to take care of ourselves too. The next 4 years will be rough. Don't want any of us to burn out.

I'm so sorry. This sucks so bad. I hope the sanctuary areas are fighting back hard and that the courts will tie up the bastard over this for years. Sometimes I feel like the most I can do is just say I don't know any immigrants (insert wink) and bitch about this administration. And donate to causes fighting this awful shit too.

Just learned today that ICE is raiding doctors' offices (questioning and taking patients as they are coming in for appointments). I am disgusted.

Yup. And schools. And churches (and other religious sites). And they are waiting at courthouses too. I'm way past disgusted and well into uncontrollable rage.

Time to research other lines of employment, maybe?

Hi, I'm an immigrant (documented, not that it matters, but the worry is hitting even our family because three of us are foreign residents and the other two are citizens by birth). Thank you for caring about us. It's been isolating to see just who cares, and who is and isn't willing to fight for us given that our own right to fight is severely limited by compliance in advance if we ever want to become naturalized citizens of your country.

Especially the potential to choke employment visas. My parents are very worried about my prospects post-graduation right now.

I'm very grossed out by the DEI rollbacks. In one sense, do we need to spend money on federal programs dedicated to this? That I get, because I think most hiring decisions are based on merit anyway, but the actual result will be only white, straight, Christian men getting hired by shitty MAGA managers. Vomit.

There are literally studies about how the exact same resume will be passed over if the name is, like, Jose and not Joe so uh. Maybe rethink that it's merit based?

I'm a minority and a recruiter in the corporate space and I'm not seeing much of that these days. Hiring managers are WAY more concerned about specific experience/certs.

A fair number of hiring managers/HR people are also minorities, which helps in the sense that it's not good ol' boys bringing in their frat buddies.

Yes, that's terrible.
