Not sure why 'underappreciated' keeps being read as 'unknown' or 'unpopular' here
well it's not by me, but this sentence only makes sense if you think "it was actually pervasive" is only a valid response to "it was unpopular/unknown" and not "it wasn't appreciated enough" which is super weird. i can think your desire for appreciation is beyond the capabilities of appreciation.

box office is not a determinative measure of appreciation, see: avatar. but if your social circle doesn't talk about it, i could see why you think its forgotten. no one i know has forgotten it.
