Obama was almost a mascot at the time, and the national mood was different. He was trendy among Liberal White Americans, and the people involved were younger then too.

It's undeniable that being female plays a role here, when both candidates who ran both times were much more qualified than their competition.

I think sexism is the bigger hurdle, given all the hostility aimed at women the day after the election.

Also the number of Latino guys I've seen interviewed who said that they liked Kamala but they couldn't vote for a woman because a woman couldn't be strong.

I really love the guys who went "but what if she's on her period and starts a war because she's grumpy" which is bullshit anyway but especially about a woman in her late 50s/early 60s.
