See, it seems a bit weird to me to complain about vocal fry like it's some sort of quirky affection instead of... someone's voice.

Some people do it on purpose when it's not actually their normal voice. People tend to criticize it in women more often then men because women aren't "supposed" to have deep and gravelly voices. I personally prefer vocal fry, but it does get annoying when people fake it. I'm not going to complain about it though, just turn the thing off and go do something else.

I can't, though maybe someone else can. I really only listen to podcasts these days, so if I find a specific episode I want and hear a fake vocal fry I just delete it. I never remember which ones they are. There may be some videos on youtube?

My experience is that people complain about a woman having vocal fry whenever they don't like what she has to say. I feel like any podcast about any controversial topic presented by a woman has, "UGH HER VOCAL FRY" comments on it, even if her voice was well above that register.

It isn’t actually the voice though. It’s the result of either shitty equipment, shitty mic placement, or shitty sound mixing.

I don’t think you’re discussing the same phenomenon that is generally meant by “vocal fry”.

It’s not an audio recording artifact. It’s a sort of vocal register and can be produced “live”.

I am. And it’s an included feature now for a lot of software so it can be done live. Even fucking screencast has it on their paid version.

So the software can take the voice of someone using vocal fry and artificially adjust their voice to remove it?

Does that involve re-pitching it higher?

You’ve got it backwards. The speaker isn’t making the sound, it’s another track laid on top.
Kinda like adding flower crowns to a pic in Snapchat.
