What're you reading? (Or the last book you read?)

(Anonymous) 2025-01-27 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Let us discuss books.

I just started The Scorpion's Sting: Antislavery and the Coming of the Civil War by James Oakes. So far it's an interesting look at the lead up to the us civil war and the thinking and strategies of antislavery abolitionists during that time that I hadn't read much about before. Not my normal thing, but I'm enjoying it so far.

I've been pecking away at Last Night a DJ Saved My Life by Bill Brewster and Frank Broughton. It's a rather dense history of DJing from the post-WWII years to the turn of the millennium. This thing is around 400 pages, so it's going to be a bit. I'm on the reggae chapter right now, and so far it's been way more interesting than the chapter on northern soul.

That sounds fascinating and not a history I would have thought of. I might add that to my TBR/books to look for at the library list.

I was reading The Wandering Inn, it was actually my intent to exclusively read that this year. I was doing the kindle versions and then planned to jump to Royal Road when I surpassed the kindle limit. If I finished everything before the end of the year, I’d start something else.

But I had to DNF it. Aside from not really liking any of the characters (or outright disliking them), there was also an issue of the author being a total nut job when it came to writing men. That was all irritating but I was going to stick it out. But then the animal abuse started and I was done. I only made it halfway through the first kindle volume but I’m glad it happened sooner rather than later.

I read one of my two Kindle first picks (they didn’t offer anything appealing in my preferred genre) and it was pretty decent but I needed something with likable characters in a fun setting. I snagged a random cozy fantasy about setting up a cocktail bar and it’s working out for me so far.

I keep seeing The Wandering Inn rec'd and each time I go to look at it I pass by for some reason or another. I'm glad to see my instincts were right. Animal abuse is a big no from me.

AYRT
TWI isn’t bad but it isn’t as great as the fans think it is. I’m all for slow burn so the pacing wasn’t an issue (and I’ve heard it picks up in like volume 2 or 3). The characterization was pretty ick. The MC goes from 0 to 100 at the drop of a hat and threatens or even attacks over extremely minor stuff. There were two great male characters but one inexplicably went wildly OOC and is now The Enemy but not the big bad or anything. The other dude died the most senseless death pretty early on. The other characters are mostly female and all of them are pretty loathsome in the “I’m gonna write a Strong, Independent Woman” kinda way.
And then the animal abuse happened and I had to nope out immediately. In retrospect, the animal abuse didn’t come out of nowhere but it felt like it did because I kept ignoring all the red flags because, “this is the most recced progfantasy ever.”

Jane Austen at Home, by Lucy Worsley. I love Lucy Worsley in general, and I enjoy some of Jane Austen's work and the TV/movie adaptations, so this is a good choice for me.

Currently making my way through one of the volumes of The Year's Best Horror (couldn't say which year off the top of my head), edited by Ellen Datlow.

Been reading Dune. Finished the first book out of the three of the novel. I can tell Paul growing up in a backstabbing environment will not make him a moral man...

Currently Reading: Thieves' Gambit by Kayvion Lewis
-Really enjoying it, it's a cute YA thief competition with a sprinkle of family drama
Last Read: That Summer by Jennifer Weiner
-Was kind of meh. Enjoyed it right up until the ending and then wanted to give it 1-star just for the ending lol

I've just started Anthony Beevor's Stalingrad, since it was recommended to me as a good book on that subject.
