It is backlash for the last twenty years of military-fic fans in Trek painting him as the only good Star Trek lead. Just sick of the rah-rah-rah grimdark war good shite.

weirdly, that's the best explanation I've seen, but at the same time, the rah-rah military Trek worldview was always a miniority back in my day - up through Voyager we still understood that there was as much science and leadership in Starfleet as there was fighting wars. I'd be pretty glad I'm no longer actively part of fandom if the pro-military view took over all of Trekkie worldview.
